  • I have the same problem, but fixit isn't working when I download and try to run (either the online or portable version). I had a virus, but apparently this firewall setting is one of the leftovers? I used all microsoft products to block and remove it (on the phone with microsoft support). What is next?

  • Hi

Make sure that PC is clean(free from zero access rootkit before trying this fixes)

This firewall issue is commonly found on vista and windows 7 (64 BIT OS)

It is recommended to contact malware removal forums to remove it first and try the fix

    Download both the registry files

    Windows firewall -  Firewall

    Base filtering engine -  BFE

Launch them,You should get a UAC prompt now

Click YES  & Restart your PC

    Now,Press Windows+ R key and type

    regedit and click ok

    go to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BFE

    Right click on it-permissions

    Click on ADD and type

    Everyone and click ok

    Now Click on Everyone

Below you have permission for users

Select full control and click ok

    Now,open RUN and type

    services.msc and click ok

start base filtering engine service and then windows firewall service

If you still have error starting windows firewall(error code 5)

give full control permission to this key similar to previous one

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SharedAccess

    Right click on it -permissions

    Click on Add and type

    Everyone and select Full control

You should able to start firewall now

You may also be missing security center and windows defender services

    Download

    Security center  -wscsvc

    Windows defender - windefend

Launch them and click YES when you get a UAC prompt

    Good luck

  • Thank you so much.  I had been oing insane trying to find the fix for this.  Somehow I lost the ability to share my printer and then I could not turn on the firewall and this was the fix.  Still not sure how it happened.

  • You sir, are a Hero.

Please give this man a medal. I really wonder Why it had to take me a hell lot of Google searches to get to this post. it would help a lot if Microsoft just had this info somewhere around the'' firewall error'' section

    Anyway,

    thnx again

  • Hi,

I have this problem too. Running Windows 7 and I first tried the Windows site version and where they said to click on "Windows Firewall" it is not present in the list. When I tried your version and get to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BFE", I have no "BFE"

I had the same problem that someone else here did that my virus protection detected Trogens being downloaded to my computer and it removed them, maybe removing some of my data for the Windows Firewall. Is there a fix for this so I can get my Firewall back up?

    Thanks

  • Greetings all,

I have had this frustrating problem for a long while, but have just resolved it thanks to an excellent free program I located by scanning through many online forums on this topic.  I am running Windows 7 Pro, 32 bit.

The free program I used to finally put an end to all of my Windows Firewall problems is called Windows Repair v1.8.0, from www.Tweaking.com.

Prior to using this program, I tried many lengthy recommendations found in online forums as well as Microsoft's Knowledge Base articles and fixes, including running sfc /scannow and Microsoft Safety Scanner. Of course, I ran all the requisite malware and virus scans, which were negative.  In services.msc, my Base Filtering Engine, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), DCOM Server Process Launcher, RPC Endpoint Mapper were all fine, although I noted Windows Firewall Authorization Driver did not appear to be listed.  Windows Firewall was present in services.smc and was set to Automatic, but would not run.

I should also add that during the past year, McAfee products have caused huge instability issues for me. Whether the problems were from their programs conflicting with Windows 7, Google Chrome or Malwarebytes, I can't be sure.  But it escalated very far for me and their engineers could not even resolve the issues, so I switched to another antivirus provider.  After switching, the system instability I had immediately ceased.

When trying to resolve your Windows Firewall issues, please be aware that many free anti-malware, anti-virus and anti-spyware tools will generate huge numbers of false positives.  You may not actually be infected, so be sure you are using up-to-date and reliable tools to scan your system. Although I do not use McAfee's paid products any longer, I highly recommend their free removal tools if you need a quick fix.  In particular, their free product called stinger.exe has been very effective.

As soon as I completed the required reboot after running Windows Repair v1.8.0, Windows Firewall started automatically.  Hooray!

Hope this information helps anyone still struggling with this problem. ;D
