Failure: Upgrade WIndows 8 to WIndows 8.1 ENT , Setuperr.log attached RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone

I've been trying to upgrade Win8 to Win 8.1 , both ENT edition , but with no luck.

    From setuperr.log

I can not find a user named " IIS APPPOOL\DefaultAppPool" and I don't even have IIS enabled

I do NOT prefer clean install because I've a lot of installed Apps.

I made some search online but Windows 8.1 has been released few days ago and information is scarce. I've also disabled AV for the setup duration, no dice.

    Any help is appreciated

  • You cannot do anything with the Windows 8.1 ISO 's except a "clean install".  Attempting to extract just the Windows 8.1 Update bits from the Windows 8.1 integrated ISOs will not work.  If you wish to successfully upgrade an existing Windows 8 Enterprise operating system to Windows 8.1, you need to wait for the standalone Windows 8.1 Update installer which will be released on October 18, 2013.

  • Hi,

For this issue, I want to know which method you used to upgrade. DVD or ISO?

Meanwhile, I suggest you upload setupact.log file so that we can help you analyze them.

    The path: C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log.

Note: I highly recommend you use SkyDrive to upload collected files and to post screen shots/pictures. Although you might not be used to it, SkyDrive features a lot of free advanced functionality around file storage capacity, sharing, privacy, and collaboration:

  • Hi Kelvin

    Thx for your reply

    - I used an ISO downloaded from TechNet subscriber downloads. I don't have a DVD attached to my laptop.

I uploaded the setup logs here , setuperr & setupact

    Cheers

  • I would strongly recommend that you patiently wait for Microsoft to release the Windows 8.1 Update for Windows 8 Enterprise users on October 18th.

  • use pnputil.exe in 8.0 to remove oem167.inf and  oem233.inf. Now try again to upgrade.

    C:\Windows\system32>pnputil -d oem167.inf
    Microsoft PnP Utility

Deleting the driver package failed :The system cannot find the file specified.

    C:\Windows\system32>pnputil -d oem233.inf
    Microsoft PnP Utility

Deleting the driver package failed :The system cannot find the file specified.

I can see entries in Regedit for 233 but there're many and I don't want to delete them manually. no trace for 167 in reg

  • Backup this key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\PnpLockdownFiles

and delete the key which have the inf files named.

  • Those keys are protected since they are owned by SYSTEM. I can take ownership but there're just so many of them

  • I have no other idea except this removal.

Phone the MS support directly, maybe they have a better solution.

  • there're plenty of these keys and they are owned by SYSTEM so I've to change owner to delete. I'm not sure if this is the right way to do that for all these keys
