Unable to install windows 8.1 on another partition using USB Drive.

    Question

  •  I partitioned the hard drive and created a simple volume with 80 GB. But during the setup, when I try to select this volume, it says "Windows cannot be installed on this disk (Show details)". It appears for every volume except the one with Windows 7.

  • Hi,

Regarding current situation, I suggest we use Diskpart command to clean the partition you would like to install Windows 8.1 on.

Before installing Windows 8.1 preview, please boot to Windows PE and choose Command prompt:

    1. Use Diskpart command line to show the partition on your disk:

Run CMD as Administrator, type following command line one by one:

    DISKPART

    List Disk

    Select Disk 0

    2. Clean the partition you would like to install Windows 8.1 preview:

    List Partition

Select Partition 0 (I suspect that this is the one you would like to install Windows 8.1 preview)

    Delete Partition 0

    3. Create new one.

    Create Partition Primary

    4. Try to restart system and reinstall Windows 8.1 preview on this partition.

For detailed information about this command, you can refer to this article:

    DISKPART:

    Hope these could be helpful.

  • Hello Kate,

we need the output from List disk first to determine what type of disk it is currently being set as which is why I was asking for the output of list disk.

The message is consistent if the system is EFI and the disk is MBR or the system is MBR and the disk is EFI.
