Upgrade vista ultimate x64 to windows 7 ultimate x64 fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

When trying to upgrade from windows vista ultimate x64 to windows 7 ultimate x64 the rtm build everything goes fine until for some reason which I cannot determine there is a reboot at the end of the install and then I can see the normal screen you see when something went wrong with starting windows 7 so it asks you if you want to try safe mode etc. only I cannot make any change and a reboot is again initiated. After this the message stating that the upgrade was not successful appears on screen and vista is rolled back.

I have checked all the logs I can find bur none give any indication as to why install is failing.

Windows 7 upgrade advisor states that there are no problems.

The compatibility check prior to installing vista from the installer states the following:
    • Upgrading Windows will affect the following features:

      • Windows Vista Ultimate Extras have been discontinued and will no longer be available after upgrading to Windows 7.
Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:

These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's website to search for updated drivers.
      •
        • Network adapters: Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter
The Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter is not listed anywhere in device manager so nothing I can do about that?
I have checked the logs which windows 7 setup creates but most are empty and no errors are recorded in any of the other logs.

I have upgraded the nvidia display drivers to the latest version which supports windows 7
I have upgraded the intel drivers of the main-board to versions which support windows 7

    Still no luck however.

    System details:
    Asus P5LD2
    Intel Pentium D930
    2 GB Ram

Are there more locations or command switches which can be given to setup to check where the error is occurring?

    Thanks

  • Replaced the SPTD.SYS driver version 1.39 with version 1.60 and the installation/upgrade went fine now.

  • Have had another go at it. No luck.
Setup does everything and does not go past the third restart. Just a quick reboot can't even see what is going on and then the rollback screen.

    Something with bthport? Bluetooth?

Upgrade advisor shows no problems, also the test of windows 7 setup shows no problems.

    Any help?

  • Have tried another time and this time I managed to press a key just before the choice for Windows 7 setup was made after the third restart. This allowed me to choose not to automaticly reboot on system failure. Now I managed to see the blue screen.
    The following information was displayed:

    SPTD.SYS
    Stop error: 0X000000D3

The driver mistakenly marked a part of its image pageable instead of non pageable.

Also tried safe booting Windows 7 but this does not work either, same blue screen. Vista is now rolled back again, going to try again this afternoon.

This has probably something to do with Daemon tools installed on the PC. Although I am pretty sure I uninstalled this. Going to have a look this afternoon. Also found http://www.duplexsecure.com/en/downloads where there is an updated version of SPTD.SYS. Also going to give that a try.

Maybe something for Microsoft to update the compatibility check because everything is green with my PC now.
