unable to read task sequence configuration disk

    Question

  • Hello

I am trying to deploy an image through stanalone dvd disk.

We have HP dx2000 and this model doesn't include DVD drive so we purchesed a USB external dvd drive.

When I tried to deploy from this dvd it is booting fine but I got an error message before the deployment wizard start.

"Unable to read task sequence configuration disk.."

I tried the same drive and DVD on another model and it is working fine.

Any suggestions why I am getting this error and how to fix it?

    Regards

  • I am sure you already found a solution to this, but perhaps it may help someone else.

I just had the same issue and found that it appeared due to the fact that the model i was about to install had two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0.

While inserting the UFD to any of the USB 3.0 ports the descibed error message would appear, however, inserting it to the USB 2.0 port it would work just fine.

I haven´t tried but perhaps it is an idea to insert the USB 3 drivers into your boot.wim if you only have USB 3.0 ports.

  • Yes I can,

as I said it is booting from the dvd and loading the files but after that directly I'm getting the message

  • yes, because the bootimage is loaded into RAM dirung that initial black screen part... But when you get the error, can you then press F8 and check if you can reade the content of the CD

  • Hi..

From the smsts.log file it can't find the boot.wim file... so it’s probably not able to read the CD/DVD drive..
You could try to make a bootable USB Stick with the Image that you have on the CD/DVD or insert the drivers for that USB CD/DVD device into the WinPE image.

  • Michael Petersen, I can't press F8 when I got the error.
Espen, if the problem with the driver, why it will load at the beginning?
from where I can get the driver for external DVD?

    Thanks alot
    appreciate your help

  • The loading of the wim into ram , and actually runnung in winpe are two different things... Enable F8 support by going to properties on your bootimage, and under the WINPE tab check off commandline support. then rebuild your boot cd.

  • Go to the vendor of the USB device and get the driver for your device. See what version of the WinPE you are running. Normally it is 6.1.7600.16385 that is a Win7 based. So you need to get the drivers for Windows 7 (x86 or x64).
Then you can insert these drivers into the WinPE at the same place that Michael describe for to enable F8. then rebuild your boot image..

  • I tried the deployment with older external drive and it is working fine on the same PC!!

Espen, my external drive is sony drx-s90u, I couldn't find any driver for it, I think they assume while it is USB it will be dedicted automatically

Any explanation for the first point?

  • try and update BIOS

  • It should be detected automatically.. Try and update bios like Micheal said.. You could also try to update the Firmware on your external drive...

    Wednesday, December 14, 2011 1:49 PM
  • Michael and Espen, I updated th BIOS and it didn't work.

    Any other suggestions?

Do you suggest to try to pull the driver directly from the windows after connecting the external drive and then injected into the boot.wim?

    Thursday, December 15, 2011 4:36 AM
  • That sounds like a good idea..

  • I have worked with deployment, and winpe for the last 10 years, and never have I had to inject usb cd drivers into WinPE... There must be something else wrong... Did you ever get the F8 stuff working?? And have you tried the different usb ports??

  • Thanks for the suggestion Joacim. That was the exact problem I was having. Upon closer inspection, the inside of the USB 3.0 port on my Lenovo X220 laptop has a slight blue color to it.

  • On a new Dell laptop out of the box, I received the "Unable to read task sequence configuration disk" error. I pressed F8, but the command prompt window didn't immediately appear until I clicked Restart on the error window. Once in the command prompt, type the following:

    Diskpart

    Select Disk 0

    Clean

    Now the TS loads properly.

  • I ran into this with ConfigMgr 2012, I have stand-alone .iso which I unpackaed to a usb external hard disk drive. With diskpart, I made the external partition active. I can boot from USB on a client computer, but I then WinPE gives this error. I already did:

    - checked, that client computer reads external disk fine
    - I cleaned existing local hard disk
    - there is no usb device in client computer
