Access denied to SharePoint Online Administrator RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

My Account is having SharePoint Online Administrator role assigned in the Tenant.

I can go to SharePoint Online admin center (https://<tenant>-admin.sharepoint.com)

When I click on new private site collection and provide details and click on create it throws Access Denied message.

What could be the reason for this?

    Best Regards,

Answers

  • In my case the issue was that there was already a group named "HR" which automatically created a site collection and I was trying to create the site collection explicitly from SharePoint Online Admin Center.

I figured out by trying to browse the site collection URL https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/sites/HR and was able to get access denied message so asked an HR team member to open the same and it worked.

  • Hi Vaibhav Antriwale,

Does this user have permissions on this site collection?

A global admin will not automatically have access to individual sites unless explicitly granted.

Grant the user permissions on the site or add the user to site collection administrators.

  • This is insane, even a Global O365 Admin not to be able to administer sites and site collections and having to beg for permissions from other non-admin people in order to do the job. How limited in thinking can MS be? What is the point of it all?

  • This is not an answer to a problem Global Tenant Administrators are facing. What is the background of it all? Why Global Tenant Admins don't automatically get access to all Sharepoint sites and site collections?
