Rename a file while Open Items - feature is disabled in permissionlevel RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We've been experimenting with a browser-only access permission level in SharePoint Online.

    Idea

Grant external users access to a doc. lib, on an unmanaged device, with options to edit (Browser only) and rename files.

    Current setup

We disabled the Open-Items (by server-side handler) feature within the permission level to force the user to Browser-Only and removing the options to sync, download and edit in the local client. However we want the user to be able the rename the file (we have the delete feature enabled). But with the current setup this is not possible, we see the button but we're not allowed.

Hopefully someone can help me out!

  • Hi MarcelSjardijn,

Your requirement cannot be implemented through editing permission level, but can be achieved through changing access control settings. If you set access control as web-only access, external users on unmanaged devices will have browser-only access with no ability to download, print, or sync files. They also won't be able to access content through apps, including the Microsoft Office desktop apps.

Go to SharePoint online admin center –> Polices --> Access control --> Unmanaged devices --> Allow limited, web-only access

    Reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/control-access-from-unmanaged-devices

Besides, you just need to grant user edit permission.
