KB2830477 causes problems in Wn7 x64 and XP Mode
-
I am running Windows 7 Professional x64 and have installed Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. XP Mode recently started crashing whenever I logged off the XPMUser account. It did not crash if the XP Mode VM was hibernated or shut down.
The crash details including the following data:
BEX64, vmwindow.exe, stackhash_1b78 or _1dc2
Interestingly, Auto Publishing no longer worked. (Adding a shortcut to the XP All Users folder did not place a shortcut in the Windows 7 user's start menu.)
In the Windows 7 AppLog, Event ID 1000 for VMWINDOW.EXE appears with the source "Application Error".
If Integration Features were disabled in XP Mode VM Settings, the crash was avoided.
If the "shut down" action was postponed, Windows 7 became unusable and had to be rebooted.
Uninstalling and then reinstalling Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC (KB958559) had no effect on the problem.
Uninstalling 2830477 (which was suggested for different reasons here and here) restored normal XP Mode operation.
There are very serious problems with 2830477.

For what it's worth, I experienced the same problem as AAronoff, and uninstalling KB2830477 resolved the issue.

KB2830477 is RDC 8.1 released to Windows 7, which introduce couple of new functionality. And there are some known compatibility issues with VPC. If you are using VPC and don't need the RDC 8.1 features, you can just uninstall this KB and stay with RDC7.
Sorry about the trouble.

Hi,
Firstly, please follow this article to check if your system meet the prerequisites:
Update for RemoteApp and Desktop Connections feature is available for Windows

If all is OK, use Clean Boot to troubleshoot if there is any software conflict:

Hello,
Thanks for your response.
The prerequisites, 2574819 and 2857650, have been installed. (IAC, Windows Update proposed the hotfix -- I didn't install 2830477 on my own initiative.)
There's little point in looking for a "software conflict." I have a single third party service starting up with Windows (DTSAudioSvc); startup apps are kept to a strict minimum. VMware is installed, but all of its services (and apps) are disabled. I believe I have identified the source of the problem -- it's 2830477.
regards, AAronoff

I have been experiencing the same error that the OP described. After spending several days investigating, I found that KB2830477 was the cause. I actually had to recover the Win7 laptop from a disk image to get back to a point where I could exit WinXP Mode without crashing the VM.
Then I started installing MS updates a few at a time until I narrowed it down to KB2830477. Once I uninstalled it, the VM no longer crashed.

I downloaded the installation software for XP for my HP Color LaserJet 2840 printer from http://www.hp.com. I tried to install it in Windows 7 XP mode. There was an error during the installation that resulted in an abort. I dusted off the pile of my old CD''s and found an installation CD which I had purchased several years ago. It is "Q3948-60220 v.3.0" This installed properly. However, afterwards I had the error with KB2830477 that is mentioned in this thread. I uninstalled KB2830477 and the problem disappeared. Thanks for this forum!
