Animated Desktop Wallpaper? Active desktop radar images.

    Question

  • Hi there,

So a while back when i was running XP on this rig, i had a active desktop wallpaper setup that would display animated local radar images.
Basically the same radar you would see if you put in your zipcode in the weather.com or accuweather.com radar section.
I dont know how i did it, but i did it.  A few years back ofcourse.

So now with Win 7, i cant get it to work for the life of me....and no, sorry, the wimpy sidebar gadgets just dont cut it.

Basically what it was, and am looking to accomplish, is have a live animated radar as my wallpaper / background.
Preferably not the whole screen, just alike a 12X8 square or something relative.

Im pretty sure i originally was using this as my source for the animated wallpaper:

    My favorite radar site

    Any ideas all?

    Thanks for reading

  • Hi

The default selection of gadgets that are installed with Windows 7 is just a very small sampling. There are thousands more available in the Gadgets Gallery.

I think what you are looking for is the Doppler Gadget. This shows an animated radar map (The same one you posted the link to) that can be set to show any section of the country.

You can download the gadget here:

    Windows Live Gallery: Doppler Gadget

Download to your desktop and double click the file to install. Once it is installed, it will be added to your collection of gadgets that are available with a right click on the desktop.

You can use the drop down menu on this gadget to view any part of the USA. Use the arrow icons to fine tune the view.

    Hope this helps.

Thank You for using Windows 7

  • Hi squeezin,

There are several gadgets in Windows Live Gallery. Please check if one of them meet your needs: http://gallery.live.com/search.aspx?q=radar.

Also, you can use third party software to achieve the Active Desktop feature in Windows 7. For more information, you can refer to these websites:

Three Active Desktop Replacements for Windows

Active Desktop replacement with Adobe AIR

  • Thanks for the reply Ronnie, but sadly the gadgets are just too small and wimpy for my liking.
    Atleast for the radar images...

Heres a link to a post i put on TSG a few days back.
It has a picture attached of what i am talking about as for the "radar wallpaper"

It kills me that every OS up to 2003 had active desktop...and then when it finally catches on witht the general public, they axe it...typical.

Heres a app that would be suffice, but it dont work with my Win 7 x64
