Keyboard/touchpad not working at Vista login

  • Hey,

    Trying to fix a HP Pavillion dv9000 for a friend. After a windows update the keyboard/touchpad won't work at the login screen.
    Safe mode does not work either. The keyboard does work in the Bios and if I boot a live CD they both work as well. A USB mouse/keyboard doesn't work either. Also, there are no system restore points saved. No DVD either. Any ideas?

    Do the other USB devices work?

    Ensure that all the drivers are the latest version, especially for the chipset (motherboard) driver and the update for BIOS.

    In addition, if any USB hub is used, please bypass it and connect the driver directly. If any un-used USB device is connected, please also unplug it.

     

    You may also reinstall USB controllers as below:

    Reinstall USB controllers

    ====================

    Note: If you are using a USB mouse, please follow the "Use the Keyboard" steps to reinstall USB controllers. Windows Vista will reinstall all controllers automatically after restarting your computer.

    Use the Mouse

    --------------

    First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

    1). Click "Start", type "Device Manager" (without the quote) in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary.

    2). In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the "Host Controller", click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

    3). Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

     

    Then, restart your computer and Windows Vista will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

    1). Press "Ctrl + Esc" to open the Start Menu.

    2). Type Device Manager in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary.

    3). In Device Manger, press Tab and use "Up" and "Down" to move the highlight to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".

    4). Press "Right" and expand it.

    5). Press "Down" to move to the first item and press "Delete" to remove it.

    6). Repeat the step 5 and uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".

  • I have the exact same issue.  The problem with your solution is you are requiring the person to use the keyboard.  Their problem (and mine as well) is neither the touchpad nor mouse respond within windows.  Within the BIOS, the keyboard responds fine.  Your solution required reinstalling drivers within windows.

    Any other solutions?

  • Hi,

    I have the same problem with my Fujitsu notebook, following updates I could not login as the keyboard, and mouse were not working. Previously, I had been able to restore the system to before the update but unfortunately there are no restore points now.

    I had created a system image some months prior and had backups created also, but as the USB ports do not work I cannot retrieve my system from this either. As with above, I cannot login, therefore I have no access to start menu, device manager etc. so this is not an option for me.

    Ideally, I would like to access my current system rather than restore it from backup or system image as I have not done a recent backup.

    Would appreciate any help that can be offered.
