Vista Reinstall from recovery Partition

  • I'm trying to rehabilitate an HP dv-3z 1000 for my son, who can't remember his password (and the fingerprint reader is dead). He doesn't care about the files on the system (he stopped using it months ago). When I tried to reinstall Vista x64 from the recovery partition, I was able to get the key entered, but the install failed at "e:\sources\install.wim"(error code 0x80070002). The recovery partition is 12.2GB. If install.wim isn't on that, where might it be?

Whoa- No \sources\install.wim. Now I see why I get the error... Anyway- nobody's ever touched the restore partition until now- and I swear I didn't delete anything. what gives? Is this an HP thing?
