  • You can use the "SQL Server Compact Toolbox" or one of the related command line tools to move from 3.5 to 4.0 - but as you do not say anything about your app, it is hard to guess what (minor) changes are required.

There is detail for my sql server compact applicaion. We released software with SQL server compact 3.5 to store up user data and configuration, which is a *.sdf file.  Recently we want to upgrade the application and must add some new parametes into sql data base, and at the same time we want to upgrade the sql server to V4.0. I think there are two seperate stories.

    So my question is that:

    1. When I add some new tables or columns into the database, how can I handle the compatible issue? for example,  user may export his data base file from a legacy system, and then he upgrades application to new version, and then he wants to duplicate the data file and configuration in new system.  What is the standard programming in SQL server compact?

    2. If I upgrade SQL to 4.0,  then could the sdf files from V3.5 be connected in new application system?

    Best regards,

    Hao

  • re 1: You can query the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views, and then issue CREATE/ALTER statements as required to get the desired schema.

re 2: You can programmatically upgrade a 3.5 database to 4.0.
