Profile redirection RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a gpo that redirect the documents folder of users to an network share and also in the same policy we redirect users profile to a different network share and also set the max profile size in this policy.

Now we want to redirect the users document folder to the Onedrive, I have create a different gpo and configured it only for the Onedrive redirection. Now I removed one of the users from Folder redirection policy and add it to the Onedrive folder redirection and can see that users document redirected to the onedrive.

Can I in Onedrive policy set the user Profile redirection to the same network share that we used in the first policy?

I asking this becuase when user that is in Onedrive Policy for the first time it take a very long time maybe 45 min to login and after user logged in the documents get synced with Onedrive. the next loging goes fast.

    Any suggestion?

  • Hello,

Thank you for posting in our TechNet forum.

1,According to our description, we are wondering whether where the GPO is linked, domain or dedicated OU?

If it is linked to the OU, there are both users and computers within this OU, right?

2,In the same GPO, we configured both user configuration and computer configuration, right? As we know, folder redirection is under user configuration while redirection user profile is under computer configuration.

3, As for the GPO of Onedrive policy, where it is linked?

As far as I understanding, we created a GPO for Onedrive policy. In this GPO, there are user configuration for folder redirection to the Onedrive and computer configuration for redirecting user profile to a different network share.

For any question, please feel free to contact us.

  • Hi Hannah,

    Thanks for your reply,

The first gpo that has folder redirection and Profile redirection both linked to an OU that containe users.

The second gpo that we use for the Onedrive redirection is linked to a different OU and test users are in this OU.

What I wnat to know is, if we can use the same network path that we use for Profile redirection in first gpo for the gpo of onedrive, Or should we use a different network path. I think we can use the same path but just to be sure.

    Thanks

  • Hi Shahin,

You are welcome. Thank you so much for your kindly reply.

As far as I understanding, we could use the same network path for profile redirection in the first GPO for the Onedrive GPO.

As per my knowledge, the profile redirection is under computer configuration. So the GPO will be linked to the OU that contains computers.

  • Thank you for your reply,

I did set the same network path for the onedrive gpo as the same as folder redirection, but still first login take a long time.

Any idea why is this happening?

    Thanks

  • Hi Shahin,

You are welcome. Thank you so much for your feedback.

As per my understanding, it might be hard to tell why this is happening. If our organization is large and our users have a lot of files, there might be network impact of uploading files.

Here we would like to share with you the below document. Hope it could be of some help to you.

  • Hi Hannah,

    Thanks for your reply,

I dont think this has anything to do with the number files that must be uploaded to the onedrive. the upload will take place from the moment that user is logged in.

Did you by any chance also setup this? what is your first login expriance? I personaly think because user is moved from first folder Redirection policy and added to the new OneDrive Folder Redirection it take sometimes for policy get applied.

    Thanks

  • Hi Shahin,

You are welcome. Thank you so much for your reply.

I am trying to do the test in my lab referring to this article Onedrive for Business: Folder Redirection via GPO. But Since I am not professional with Onedrive, I am stuck at the configuration.

I have done some research, and it seems that folder redirection policy would cause slow login. The network will be slow at first login. Once the sync has occurred, the next login will be normal. Some reference as shown below:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/0659c1b1-3b91-4869-ba87-748328b686e5/slow-logon-with-folder-redirection?forum=win10itprogeneral

    https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1570600-folder-redirect-policy-causing-slow-login

It is suggested that we could enable Netlogon debug log and capture the network packet to further troubleshoot.
