False Error 293 When Trying to Attach to Agent Installed on DC RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to attach to a newly installed MABS DPM agent on a Domain Controller, I get a false error message. It states, wrongly, that the account, domain or credentials are wrong.  Has anyone got a workaround for this bug ?  The account in question is a domain admin.  See below.  The DC is functioning fine.

    Error Code 293

    Additional Info

    MABS DPM: v3 / 13.0.415.0 on Windows Server 2019
    DC: Windows Server 2019.

  • Hi,

    A few questions:

    - How was the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent installed on your Domain Controller (DC)?

    - Which version of the MARS agent do you have installed on the DC?

    - Are the DC and the Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) located in the same domain?

    - Did you try another account?

    - Do you have the possibility to push the agent from MABS instead of attaching?

    Best regards,
    Leon

    Thanks Leon,

    1. On the DC, I copied down the MARS agent from the MABS server then ran it locally using .\DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe <MABS server>

    2. I can't remember the version, but it's the one that is in the MABS server recovery agent folder in Program Files.

    3. Yes, I tried two, and checked the first account's credentials elsewhere too. It's fine.

    4. No, we have Windows firewall enabled. This method of installing the MARS agent worked on our member servers.

  • You'll need to first of all ensure that the required firewall ports are open:
    Configure firewall settings in DPM

As this is a DC it could be that there's more hardening done, so it may prevent the attachment.

You could also try uninstalling the agent, then download the latest MARS agent (version 2.0.9177.0) from here:
    https://aka.ms/azurebackup_agent

Install it manually and then try attaching it via MABS.

I think the firewall ports are open, as the agent installer did this automatically. I agree with your comments about hardening, though, and I'll look into this further when I return to work tomorrow. I'll also check if we're using that agent version. Thanks, this has been helpful.

    Leon,

We might be dealing with multiple different agent types and multiple versioning schemes here.  Here's the details on the agent we're using for all our backed up servers, not just this DC.

    PS C:\Installation> Get-Command -Name .\DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe

    CommandType Name Version Source
    ----------- ---- ------- ------
    Application DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe 6.2.29.0 C:\Installation\DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe

  • The Get-Command retrieves the "product version" of the agent installer, not the actual file version which is the agent version.

This is the same agent version if you would push the agent from the Microsoft Azure Backup Server. Did you go through any Group Policies that may harden the DC?
