Windows 8 RTM activation RRS feed

  • Domanda

  • Hi there,

On both the Release Preview and now the RTM I installed fresh from TechNet this morning, have encountered activation issues.

I put my TechNet product key upon installation and all was fine, when I checked the activation status a few hours ago - Windows was activated. Tonight my action center says that Windows is now not activated, when I click to do so I get the following error:

    0xD0000010
Unable to find detailed error description
    Unknown facility code of:0x1000 (4096L)
    Facility error: 0x10 (16L)

I have read instructions to do the following:

    • open CMD as admin
    • type slmgr /upk
    • then type slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

I can do this but I am worried that if this keeps happening I will run out of activations with this product key - so I am a bit worried about it.

Is this the only solution? If I need to do this on a regular basis, am I at risk at my product key being blocked?

    Thanks for your help.

Got it to work by doing the following:

Run an elevated CMD window and execute slmgr.vbs -ipk "YOUR_PRODUCT_KEY". Now you can use the activation wizard found in the control panel.

    Hi,

Do you mean the issue comes back even after you installed product again?

  • No, but at almost every reboot. I ideally don't want to reinstall as I am just setup fine, also, as this did happen to me on the release preview (which was a previous install) then I think it must be something related to my setup.

Is Microsoft pinging the activation server at every logon? Is it possible that if this fails, say due to internet access not being ready that this fails - causing me to be non activated again?

Extra info: Also this was a clean install and not an upgrade of any sort.

  • Hi,

For activating a Windows 8 RTM Enterprise just use slmgr as explained here :

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/timart/archive/2012/08/29/activate-windows-8-enterprise-without-slui-dns-name-does-not-exist.aspx

    Hope this help.

  • Dear Russ,

Thanks for posting the report. Did you recently changed or upgraded any of your hardware component? Or you constantly changing any hardware components? If not you don't have to worry about the activation but I would appreciate a screenshot of the error message from your Windows 8 detailed activation screen.

  • Dear Russ,

Did you tried the automated phone activation system? It should work for sure if you have a genuine key. You can also speak to the Microsoft Customer Support if you have need further help with activation.

Follow the steps for phone activation:

    1. Type - Slui 4 in the run command.
    2. Select your country and click next

You can either call your local Toll Free No or checkout the following video which will help you to activate over phone using Skype (It's free).

  • Hi there, Prathaprabhu. I've not tried the phone activation yet because my system switches from being activated to deactivated at boot time. 75% of the time, my Windows is activated, it's fixing the other times when I am told it isn't.

Hi Russ, most likely your machine lost activation status due to corrupted licensing files or signatures.

To confirm this, could you also post the cab file generated by LicensingDiag? (Run licensingdiag -report report.txt -log report.cab and post report.cab)

You can try to refresh your PC to bring it to activated state. I suspect virus/malware corrupted license files. If that's the case, you might have to reinstall windows.

    mercoledì 12 settembre 2012 18:20
  • Hi Xiao.

Thanks for your reply. Because I don't know what the cab file is, I don't know if it is safe to post. If there is a way to extract my product key from it then I'd be in trouble.

  • I don't know for sure yet, but I think I may have found my problem. In the last 24hours I have been having CMOS warnings from the BIOS, I think my battery may be dodgy. Perhaps it hasn't been keeping the time correctly, which has caused my system to become deactivated etc. Will order a new battery and see if the issue stops.

  • Sorry I'm late on this one - but hasn't anyone in MS realised yet that MGADiag is NOT SUITABLE for Win 8?

There is the inbuilt Licensingdiag tool instead.

  • FWIW, the Product Key isn't present in full in any diagostic report - MGADiag by default will disclose only the last 3 groups of characters - which still leaves 25^10 combinations to pick from.

Licensingdiag only discloses the final 5 characters - which means that the available combinations goes up to 25^20 :)

The cab file doesn't disclose any more pernally identifiable data that I can see - but does contain data which can be read by MS internal software for diagnostic purposes.

You can view the data by extracting the cab file in WinRar, and opening the content in Notepad+ (Notepad can get sniffy about opening files with this length line)

This has to be the oddest thing in the world to me. I was having the exact same issues and got down to this post here and then looked at my Galaxy S3 and thought, why not. Unplugged it and told Windows 8 Pro to activate again. Worked.

Why on earth does a usb phone in debug stop a box from activating windows?

  • I had this EXACT error. I had my Galaxy S2 plugged in in debug mode. Unplugged it, what do you know. Instantly after I unplugged it, the windows activation dialog came up saying activation succeeded. I didn't even tell it to try activating again. That's interesting.

  • Wow.  After running every damn command prompt, reg hack and everything else I stumbled onto, I was reading this post and thinking "yeah yeah, same old crap that doesn't work" than saw the "unplug Samsung phone".  After all that, unplugged my Galaxy Note and voila, activated as normal.  That really needs to be shown in Microsoft knowledge base or would that be asking too much of a multi-billion dollar company?  1 second fix, I love you hyuchii!!

  • This was actually the issue with me also. I read and thought...no freaking way....after a half hour of troubleshooting. Reached over, unplug my Note II and boom, Windows is activated on next try.... are you kidding me, lol...
    venerdì 7 dicembre 2012 01:48
  • I just joined to add the same thing. My already activated Windows 8 said it needed to be reactivated which I though was weird. So I went to activate, it failed, then I scoured the internet stumbling upon this post. I read down the list and got to the Samsung issues... As I looked over at my computer I realized my Samsung Note 10.1 was plugged in. So I though, well lets see, and as soon as I unplugged it the computer instantly activated. I find it strange that this prohibits or causes these issues. This may be something MS wants to look into.

I can't believe that plugging a Samsung Smartphone would screw up Windows Activation this bad. Microsoft should be aware of this and release a hotfix ASAP.

  • Strangest problem in the world and this has been annoying me for weeks. I never made the link that the Windows 8 and Office 2013 activation errors only came up when I had my Samsung Galaxy S2 connected. So glad I stumbled onto this thread.
