sideloading product activation key + Windows 8

  • The requirements to allow a program to run under the “Win8 UI style” on a production system without going thru the App store is explained below.

*It is very possible that the pre-release Windows 8 ISO’s allowed programs to be installed and run without the sideloading key. There is no way of knowing when an “update” fixes this loophole! As well as the pre-release expiring.  Please read on….

    Installation/Setup Program

There is no “Setup” program with VS2012, instead you get a free license to run a “lite” version of InstallShield or you have to use the latest version of 'Windows Installer XML (WIX) Toolset 3.6'

    Running

Although you can install, your “Signed” application will display an “X” for the tile and will not execute.  In order to run on the computer, tablet or other Windows 8 devices require that the system has a sideloading key installed via Powershell.

In order to purchase side-loading license keys the computers OS license must be part of a Volume License program, at minimum the “Open License”. Or at least you have purchased 5 licenses at full retail and/or whatever price the Volume License program sets.  Since the OS Keys purchased are VL keys, it is possible that a “retail” key will not support the separate sideloading key

The minimum sideloading keys purchase is 100!

    Open License "required"

Open License is a good choice if you are a corporate, academic, charitable, or government organization that wants to pay as you go. You must have a minimum initial purchase of five software licenses for an Open License agreement, but you can acquire additional licensed products through Open License in any quantity at any time during the two-year agreement term.

Windows Enterprise Sideloading is the process of installing new Windows 8 Apps being used for the benefit of the customer directly to a device without going through the Windows Store.  Domain joined devices running Windows 8 Enterprise edition, in any VL program, are feature-enabled for Windows Enterprise Sideloading.  Windows Enterprise Sideloading canalso be enabled on devices running Windows 8 Enterprise that are not domain joined, and devices running Windows 8 Pro, or Windows RT through the use of a product key.  In all cases, Windows Enterprise Sideloading may only be used to deploy Apps that are used for the benefit of the Volume Licensing customer.  Windows Enterprise Sideloading functionality is supplemental to the Windows Desktop Operating System , and as such, the license terms applicable to the Windows Desktop Operating System, as supplemented here, apply to customers’ use of it.

    Software Assurance Benefit

A product key may be used to enable Windows Enterprise Sideloading on any of the following devices:

4  Devices with active Windows Software Assurance coverage

4  Devices with an active Windows Intune or VDA subscription

    4  Windows RT devices

4  Devices covered by the Windows Companion Subscription License

Windows Enterprise Sideloading may only be enabled on any permitted device prior to the expiration of the corresponding Software Assurance coverage or Subscription License. In Academic programs Windows Enterprise Sideloading may only be enabled on institution owned devices.

Enterprise Sideloading License available for purchase

Customers may purchase Enterprise Sideloading licenses.  Each such Enterprise Sideloading license must be permanently assigned to a single device. In Academic programs Windows Enterprise Sideloading may only be enabled on institution owned devices.

  • How can i obtain a sideloading product activation key.

I need to  enable sideloading on Windows® 8 Pro device

Please help me for the support:

You can, in fact, side-load on a non-domain joined Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise machine. That said, get ready to shell out $3000 - as they are only sold in packs of 100. Or, you can sign up for a developers license for each machine.

  • I am developing an Application for Windows 8.1 (I am new on this).  Is a LOB (Line of Business) App and the idea is to do sideloading.
There is a lot of different information on the web with regards to product activation key.

I know this post is old but that could imply that some of you have already first hand experience on this.
I have read an article called Windows 8.1 Update: Sideloading Enhancements saying:
"Also starting May 1, 2014, other customers who want to enable sideloading will be able to purchase an Enterprise Sideloading key for $100 through the Open License program.  An unlimited number of devices can be enabled for sideloading using this key."

    - Have any of you know if this is the real price?

I would need to sideload my application for instance in 10 different devices.
Do you know from where precisely I can get this product activation key?
    Thanks,

You need a Volume Licensing agreement with MSFT. If you don't already have a VL agreement, you need to arrange that with MSFT. There are several types of VL agreement to choose from, depending upon the Licensing Program you choose: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/
