"Only apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container" confusion. RRS feed

  • Pergunta

  • Hi.

I've shared a folder with the everyone group giving full permission. In the NTFS settings the permissions apply to "This folder, subfolders and files". There's a box underneath that's unticked "Only apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container".

I don't understand what would change If I enabled this option.

  • Hi,

If you want all the sub-folder and sub sub folder inherit the permissions, then don’t forget the ”Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only” option.

For further permission, please refer to this article:

  • Hi. Thanks for replying.

From what I've understood from the article ,not ticking the box will apply Inherited permissions to subsequent folders created.

If no further subfolders or files are created then nothing will change when the box Is ticked.

I tested this option on a subfolder I created and It appeared as If I couldn't create any further subfolders or files but It wasn't giving me a denied error.

After unticking the box again , all the subfolders and files I tried to create appeared which seemed a bit strange.

  • I can confirm that the Karen from Microsoft is wrong here - she's described the opposite situation to what actually occurs.

As shown on this page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc776140(v=ws.10).aspx

Selecting 'Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only' will ONLY apply it to those files and folders, and subsequent folders will NOT have the same security applied.

So the 'ONLY' bit is key here.

  • Thanks for the clarification.  The article is in direct contradiction to her post.
