is WDF an appropriate choice for me if I wanna write drivers for both win7(32,64) and xp(32,64) RRS feed

  • I just checked from  that WDK7.1 will be for winxp, but it doesn't indicate whether WDK7.1 will support WIN7 or not? So, I have following questions:

1:which version of Visual Studio and WDK should I choose to install if I want to develop drivers for winxp and Win7?

2: is the WDF a reasonable choice for me since I only wanna drivers for win7 and win xp?

3: is there some special considerations if both of the 32 and 64 edition of one specific OS version has to be supported?

Any help here will be appreciated.

And anyway the  doc from really sucks. HAVE TO FRANK ABOUT THAT.

  • The Windows Driver Kit (WDK) Version 7.1.0 is an update to the WDK 7.0.0 release and contains the tools, code samples, documentation, compilers, headers and libraries with which software developers create drivers for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2003.

In the VS 2012, it build a template to WDF driver, it is easy to create a driver from template. Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition is free and can be used as an IDE for the drivers.
