Exchange System Manager for exchange 2003?

  • Hi all,

I know there is an install for Exchange System Manager for Exchange Server 2003 for vista but wondered if there is one for Windows 7 RTM. The only other way I can think of getting this to work is to install ESM under Windows XP mode but this is not ideal.

I understand that Exchange Server 2003 is now out of date but there are still many companies still using it.

    Can anyone help?

Hi, This is not my solution but I kept it for my notes. I can not remember the link, but see if it will help. Slan go foill, Paul

    Taken from this link

First this is not a question but a solution, and I sure hope that Microsoft will take a look and make this solution an approved solution....

Microsoft states that Exchange System Manager cannot be ran on Windows 7 with ADUC, however it can be ran quite easily.  For once Microsoft has the answer already developed, and they just don't know it, or don't want us to know it.

    The Answer is as follows.

Windows6.1-KB958830-x86 (update for Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7RC)
ExchangeMapiCDO.msi (needed for Windows Vista install of ESMVista)
ESMVista.msi ( this file needs to be slightly modified to work)

Windows 7 RC will work great with Exchange Tools, but the install msi for Vista (ESMVista.msi) has some limits in it... It is designed to check for Windows version and only allow for install on a Vista OS.  By removing these system checks from the MSI file I was able to install the ESMVISTA.msi on my computer, and it works without any errors, or warnings...

As I cannot attach the files here, I have placed them on a public server for your review.  Please go to for the details.  It would be great if Microsoft would review this solution and possibly put it out as an approved solution once their techs test and clean it up a little......

    Thanks and good luck.

Remember this is not approved by Microsoft yet!, please use with caution......  Man this will make Windows 7 an Admins Dream come true, as Vista fell way short.....

  • Hi, Thanks for trying to help with this issue. I really need the answer to get this going for our work environment here pretty badly.

BUT, there is a problem with your info. After trying a couple of times myself and eventually getting a few Microsoft Exchange server reps to look at the website you provided, I was told that they won't look at your resolution because of the site. It is a site forcing every way possible to force a login, and/or force software install, and links to do so redirect to gourmet websites. They told me they belief the site you are posting on is considered a spam/virus intrusion site and won't consider it.
SO, can you please put the documents and files on a real IT based information sharing site where you can just open up the pdf and download the files?

I have an open relationship from our company with Microsoft and could get them to look at it harder for approval, if they could just get to the data without hassle.

Let us know what you decide.

  • Hi, As I said in the 1st post. This is a solution that was posted in another link. I made a copy for my notes. This is not my suggestion. If I find the link I will post it here. Slan go foill, Paul

After much research, I took a shot-in-the-dark approach and it seems to have worked.

Microsoft made an Exchange 2003 System Manager MSI for Vista available some time back. Whenever I tried to install it on W7 RC1, it reported an error, "This product requires Windows Vista."

I ran the msi from the run command using the /q switch, and it work. It skipped past the error prompt and installed just fine. Started up my RSAT ADUC and there were the Exchange tabs. I am much relieved! The link to the Vista version of ESM 2003 is below; although, MS provides it in .EXE format, the /q switch may not work with the .exe. Google for the MSI or use an extractor tool to exctract the MSI from the exe provided by MS. Run it with the quiet install switch and you should be good to go. For example: E:\ESMVISTA.MSI /q

  • I am running Windows 7 64-bit Professional and so far have not found a solution to bring up the exchange tabs and additional info tabs in ADUC.

    Any updates?

  • I have researched this quite awhile and have found no solution for Windows 7 64 bit.  (other than compatability mode) Come on Microsoft, get with the program.

  • Windows 7 64 bit:

If you start mmc with the /32 switch then you can add ADUC and see the exchange tabs.

or in the shortcut to ADUC add the /32

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Exchsrvr\bin\users and computers.msc" /32
