WSUS mmc console freezes when I try to decline updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • On Windows Server 2012 R2 WSUS console, when I try to decline some updates, the WSUS console (mmc) hangs.  I sort by supersedence and I am trying to clean up just a few updates that are no longer needed by declining them.  I used to be able to do this, but now it just hangs.

    Any ideas?

What is the result after running server cleanup wizard? Also check if you have installed any update or hotfix recently on the WSUS server. In some cases, the WSUS console is frozen due to some hotfix.

In this Thread you will find many Tipps for cleanup your WSUS:

But before, pls run this Script:

And you can try to clean up with Powershell:

  • I think that link is a little out of date.  At the bottom of the article for Verified on Windows Server 2012 it says No.

I was able to download sqlcmd and run it but I get an error.  This is 2012 R2 WSUS.  I am just trying to decline some updates in the console.  I tried rebooting the server.  I logged on with a different admin account (thinking it was something about mmc cached data for the user).  I tried declining one update.  That all just hangs mmc.exe.

Whats the best way to run the script because I get this...

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn>sqlcmd -S np:\\.pipe\MSSQL$M
    ICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query -i "C:\Program Files\Update Services\Database\WsusDBMai
    ntenance.sql"
    HResult 0x57, Level 16, State 1
Named Pipes Provider: Invalid parameter(s) found [87].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
     allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.

Do you use WID as WSUS database? If yes, the database name for 2012 and 2012 R2 is \\.\pipe\Microsoft##WID\tsql\query

Related link about WID database name, see "notes" in the article:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852349.aspx

Try again use that database name to complete reindex WSUS database.

Besides, also run server cleanup wizard to check if it could help to solve your original issue.

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • I tried that too with both np: in front and without, get errors.

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn>sqlcmd -S np:\\.pipe\Microso
    ft##WID\tsql\query -i "C:\Program Files\Update SErvices\Database\WsusDBMaintenan
    ce.sql"
    HResult 0x57, Level 16, State 1
Named Pipes Provider: Invalid parameter(s) found [87].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
     allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn>sqlcmd -S \\.pipe\Microsoft#
    #WID\tsql\query -i "C:\Program Files\Update SErvices\Database\WsusDBMaintenance.
    sql"
    HResult 0x57, Level 16, State 1
Named Pipes Provider: Invalid parameter(s) found [87].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
     allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.

The thing is SQL is not even installed on here, I don't have Mgmt studio or the configuration where I could enable / disable things like TCP/IP, Named Pipes, etc...

I just want the mmc console to not hang in a (not responding) state if declining updates that have been superseded by newer ones.  I'll try to run all of the cleanup wizards from the Windows Update Services MMC console.
