  • When you install Windows on Hyper-V, IS will automatically be installed. The location for the ISO is under C:\windows\system32\vmguest.iso.

  • This ISO is actually generated dynamically each time the Hyper-V Server is rebooted.

This is done to ensure that the ISO in-the-box always matches the patch level of the Hyper-V Server.

So you will always be installing the latest into your VMs (or one that aligns properly with your server).

  • Perhaps have a look at this to automate the installation of Hyper-V IS.

  • My newly installed Hyper-V 2012R2 does not generate the vmguest.iso.  It has the latest MS updates and I just rebooted and tried resting the vmms.exe service.  No dice.  Is it possible because it's a trial-version this is not allowing it to work? ( a stretch, I know)

    ???

  • This happens on reboot of the server.  And should always happen.

To know if it is there, open the console of a VM and select the action "Insert Integration Services Setup Disk"  (you never directly browse to the vmguest.iso.

I just checked my fresh and clean 2012 R2 server and it is there.  the above action would fail if it wasn't.

So unless the insert action is failing on the VM console, the ISO exists.
