SQL Server 2012 will be supported on Windows Server 2016?

  • Hi Pratyush.

    >>I  have tested SQL Server 2012 on Win Server 2016 and it is working fine.

The same result with yours on my machine after a long time installing on my server 2016TP4.

I suggest you could suggest the customers upgrade the sql package to sp3 if possible.

Since the server 2016 official version has not been released, no one could ensure that the new OS will supports all of the previous versions.

Besides, I have found out the minimum requires for win10 is sql 2012 sp2 or later update version,so I suppose the winserver 2016 will be the same requires, as they have the same cores.

  • I'm not sure why this was moved here when this is clearly an SQL Server product team question.

It's not up to the operating system to support the application, but for the application (in this case SQL Server 2016) to be compatible with the operating system.

Oh well. Perhaps someone here knows as an aside, but this really belongs back in the SQL Server forums.

  • Hi Pratyush,

While I've only run a quick search, if SQL Server 2016 is supported on Server 2008 R2 Server Core (and Server 2012 Server Core is also mentioned) as mentioned here, then it's safe to say it'll be supported on Server 2012.

    Cheers,

  • I apologise, as I read the subject heading entirely the wrong way around insofar as I read it as SQL Server 2016 being compatible with Windows Server 2012. Please ignore my previous post regarding Server Core.

Regardless, this post does belong back in the SQL Server forums.

  • Hi Pratyush,

    >>Will SQL server 2012 will be supported on Windows Server 2016?

According to my understanding, server 2016 will continue to supports sql 2012.

But,as we known that server 2016 is a new OS for us, so I suggest you could upgrade the sql package to sp3 if possible.

Besides, I have a server 2016 TP4 currently and now I'm installing sql 2012 on it, for testing purpose.

I will update the results soon as soon as possible.

    Best regards,

  • Thanks for the quick response.

I have tested SQL Server 2012 on Win Server 2016 and it is working fine. This evaluation of Windows Server 2016 I am doing for a customer product which uses SQL server 2012 as backend.

Before suggesting that the customer product can in future migrate to Win Server 2016, I wanted to be sure that Microsoft will support SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2016.
