Windows Server 2008 R2 - Session (ID x ) Remote Control Failed. Domain Administrator. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I am having an issue when trying to remote control a user session on Windows Server 2008 R2.

If I log onto the system as the domain Administrator, I am able to control the session of users. However If I log onto my own account as Domain Admin, member of the Administrator group. I recieve an error which is:

    Windows Task Manager:
Session (ID x) Remote Control Failed

There are many Domain Admins in my organization - which means we can't all simply log on as the Domain Administrator to our servers.

How can I enable Remote Desktop Session Shadows on all of my Domain Admin accounts?

The current process I use is:

    #

    Open Task Manager

    Click the Users Tab

Right Click the User - Remote Control

    The error is then shown.

    #

Doing this using the Administrator account work, however doing it from my account which like I say is in the Domain Admin group - does not work.

    Thank you for your time.

  • Hi all,

Just so you know i've found the soloution to this - after 3 days of research. It was UAC control which prevents this running.

I disabled UAC and all is fine.

    Grr..

    Thanks for your input.

  • Hi,

In the properties of RDP-TCP connection go to the security tab and check if the required group has enough permissions.

  • Hi,

Yeah, i've checked this. Made sure admins and domain admins (my group) is added with Full Control. However, the same problem is still shown.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Before attempting to Remote Control from Task Manager, click Show processes from all users on the Processes tab.  This will re-launch Task Manager using an administrator token instead of standard user token.

Another thing you can do is right-click on taskmgr.exe and choose Run as Administrator.  Or use RDS Manager to initiate the Remote Control.

  • In the older TS version there was a problem when the resolution was causing the problem. Try do it from using the same resolution, for example if the client uses 800x600 you should use the same when connecting to the TS.

    Hi,

Thanks for your input, however i'm afriad none of these steps work.

When using the RDS Manager, I recieve "Access is Denited" and when running taskmgr.exe an Admin I'm still getting the Session (ID x) Remote Control Failed.

When running this as an admin, i've been prompted to input the username and p/w of the admin for UAC. Here I enter my domain administrator account and still fails.

    Bizzare!

    Kudrat,

Tried this too and still have the issue.

It must be something to do with R2 - however, I do have other R2 Serve running in my domain which do work. I've checked and compared all their secuirty and GPO's and haven't been able to spot anything which stands out.

  • Just for future reference if anyone finds this thread, this is due to your shadowing being seen as another session.  You can set the Computer GPO Terminal Services setting "Restrict Terminal Services users to a single remote session" to "Disabled" to fix this.

Next, you will have a problem with UAC.  This is fixed by setting: "Computer Settings\Security Settings\User Account Control: Allow UIAccess applications to prompt for elevation without using the secure desktop" to "Disabled."

  • I initiated remote control using server manager and for some reason that works.  Launching via Task Manager does not work.

  • Theres an easy solution.

    1) Attrib the user who desires to remote access the sessions on administrators group.

    2) In this users's desktop, create a shortcut to taskmgr.exe.

    3) Always you need to control a remote session, then execute the shortcut as administrator, access the users tab, and remote control them.

    This might help you.
