w2k8 server backup error: the user name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer RRS feed

    Greetings. I am a new user of both qnap and w2k8 server.

    I joined qnap device to the w2k8 domain. Now I am trying to set up server backup I ran into a problem.

    As instructed I use QNAPname\user to login, it takes the login info and takes me to the next and final step, but all the way at the end i get the following error message:

    (the same user login information works fine for win7 workstations backup)

    the user name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer

    Any update? Is the issue resolved?

     

    As I understand that you set the shared folder on QNAP device, while you can access the shared folder from Windows 7 workstation using the credential QNAPname\user, but you failed to access it from Windows Server 2008 machine. If I misunderstand, please feel free to let me know.

     

    How the QNAP device is connected? Is it connected to Windows 7 workstation?

     

    According to the error message, it seems that Windows Server 2008 can’t recognize the user QNAPname\user. Please check the permissions on the shared folder, ensure that you assign the access rights to the domain users. You could try to create a different user in “User Management”, then setup the access rights on the shared folder for everyone and login with a different user to see how it works.

     

    BTW, as the issue occurs with QNAP device, please post in QNAP forums as well.

    Hi Peter,

    Can you pl. collect backup traces from %windir%\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\*.etl and send them across to my mail - misingh-nospam@microsoft.com (pl. remove -nospam phrase from the id to get the correct one)?

    I have figured this one out.  The user that is used to access the remote share needs to be added as a local admin or backup operator on the local server.  From the Control Panel, User Accounts -> Give other users access to this computer.  Add the user here and it should work.

    In a Windows 2008 R2 domain:

    1. Create a new user in active directory with the same name as the local user on your Nas Drive (QNAP)

    2. Make the user a member of admin or backup opperators

    Backup setup will now work.

    That was it!  I was backing up a DC and thought domain admin rights should work.  Guess Microsoft wants you to use the backup operators group for something.

    I was able to get by the error by creating a local user on my 2008 VM server that matched the NAS (a Synology device) user name and password. After that I was able to schedule the server backup successfully. (I did join the NAS to the domain before I tried creating the local user, but that did not solve the problem. I am not sure it is even necessary for the fix to work)

    You need:

    same user name and password in both device an also member of backup operator group

    created user has modify permission on destination shared folder

    in final step (create Backup Job) just enter user name without any domain name or computer name at beginning!!

    just enter user name and password

    not this: Domain\User or Computer name\User

    in fact is this process (backup) need to verify user name in both backup server an remote share device.

    when you using in domain joined computers, you have no problem

    the problem occur when you have work-group computers
