TS/RDS User CALS in non-Domain/AD environment RRS feed

  • Question

  • We do not use a Domain or AD in our environment. We have standalone terminal servers being updated to 2008 R2. We have a 2008 R2 licensing server with 20 TS/RDS user cals. It was definitely working at one time, but now it is not giving out any licenses. I'm not able to run reporting to see if the licenses are all used, I believe because it looks like a Domain or AD is required for reporting.

Is there any way to show if all the CALS are being used when you are not an a Domain or AD? How do I monitor the user CALs?

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks,
    James

  • Hi, James,

As described at the link below, per-user RDS CAL usage is tracked in the user account properties in AD, so if you want to track usage you'll need AD or use per-device CALs (reported through the RD Licensing Manager).

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi,

I am afraid that you need to change your CAL to per device CAL first.

You can call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist.

  • I appreciate the response. I guess we'll have to switch to per device mode, since we have no plans for Domain/AD.

What is the best/proper way to switch the licensing mode? I found this:

    http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-3638719.php

Or do I just remove and re-add the Terminal Server Licensing?

I also need to deal with the per User CALs. Should I remove those first? Do I need to go through the MS Clearing House for re-adding? Hopefully they can be changed to per device....

    Thanks,

    James
