Can you run a 32 bit program on a 64 bit system?

    Question

  •  I have a 64 bit W7 Pro but I need to run an old program that will only run on a 32 bit machine (the program runs on 32 bit XP and W7). My hardware is compatible with the virtual machine and XP mode.  Is this possible?

This will be a MAJOR deciding factor in upgrading our employees. If we cannot run this program in W7 64 bit, then we cannot use W7 64 bit. The other issue is that the download for XP mode and Virtual Machine both stop downloading after 5-10 minutes (about 100MB into the download) so I have been unable to even try XP mode to see if its compatible with this program.

So in short. My questions are: Can a 32 bit program run on a 64 bit machine? And, is there a place that I can download the XP mode and Virtual machine without the download timing out or stopping outright?

In general, 32bit applications are compatible with 64bit platforms, as 64bit Windows includes a 32bit subsystem (WOW).
A similar subsystem exists on 32bit platforms, for 16bit applications.

You can check various compatibility resource lists (handy references at the top of the appcompat forum).
You may not need to use XP Mode - but it's worth noting that sometimes, a local VM solution (like XP Mode) is a viable solution.

Alternate download for XP Mode: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8002
(You will need Windows Virtual PC as well: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3702)
