Can we make windows 2012 as an addtional domain controller


  • Dear all

      I have windows 2008r2 DC installed with Remote desktop programs configured and also which works as fileserver. Now I want to make an Additional Domain controller windows 2012.  My questions are below

      a) Can we make Windows2012 as Additional domain controller.

      b) If windows 2012 functions as an additional domain controller, Will File server works.

     c) If windows 2012 functions as an additional domain controller, Will remote app program services work.

    As long as your do not have any pre-2003 DC's running at pre 2003 functional levels, you can add a server 2012 and promote it to a secondary DC.

  • From what I have summized the Edition will have to be Server 2012 Standard or Datacenter which will require new CAL's.

    For Essentials and Foundation Active Directory Domain Services the limitation for both is that they must be the root of forest and domain.  So, if you put either of these 2 Editions on your domain and promote it they will take over and your existing DC will have to be docommisioned in 20 some days.
