WSUS - Windows Update error 800F0818

    Question

  • Hi, I have a WSUS server in my organization.. all clients are working well, except one with Windows Server 2008 R2.

The Windows Update says that Windows Update Agent 7.4.7600.226 upgrade is required and that windows update will close and reopen after the upgrade..
in fact it closes but re-opens with an error:

    Windows Update Agent 7.4.7600.226
    Installation date: ‎11/‎12/‎2009 8:35 AM
    Installation status: Failed
    Error details: Code 800F0818

The manifest contained in this package does not have the expected identity. The package may be invalid or corrupted.

Which referred me to an invalid FWLINK. :(

How exactly are you trying to update the WUAgent? I see that you have a R2 server running the v7.3 WUAgent, and the machine is configured to use a WSUS Server. Is the WSUS Server upgraded to Service Pack 2? The R2 server should have no issues selfupdating from a WSUS3SP2 server.

  • Hi, thanx for the answer,

the WSUS has SP2 installed. I tried installing the update agent both via WSUS and by manually downloading the package, same result.
Using the online windows update (no WSUS), that update is net found..

Okay, let's see what happens during an attempt to install the agent.

    1. Note the system time of the client.
    2. Run WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe /wuforce
    3. After completion, post all of the entries in the WindowsUpdate.log starting at the time recorded in Step #1.

You need to fix the System Restore functionality on this system.

Have you successfully repaired the System Restore functionality on this client?

  • No, I have absolutely no idea of what I should restore... everything else is working fine...

I didn't say anything about restoring anything. I said that it appears that you may need to *repair* the System Restore functionality of that system.

In the previous message I pointed out that you're getting an error message on the srclient.dll file.

    > WARNING: LoadLibrary failed for srclient.dll with hr:8007007E

This file is a core component of the System Restore functionality of the Windows operating system, and indicates a critical failure in this core subsystem of the operating system. To address the issue of repairing the System Restore functionality of system, you'll likely need to seek assistance somewhere other than a =WSUS= forum, as I (we?) don't have the expertise to step you through fixing System Restore -- shucks we're not even sure of the specific cause. If System Restore does not function correctly, you will not be able to successfully install any operating system update.
