Starting points for troubleshooting media streaming.

    Question

  • I've installed WSE 2012, and setup the typical media folders and enabled streaming. Originally I even had issues with DLNA scenarios, but seem to have those resolved. Pics work fine. Audio and video (wma/wmv) fail. It is failing for the WebUI and for the win8/winphone8 apps.  Here is the situation at the moment:

    Client

    Location

    Pictures

    Music / Video

Windows media Player domain joined PC

    Intranet

    Works

    Works

    WinPhone 8 DLNA app

    Intranet

    Works

    Works

    Xbox 360

    Intranet

    Works

    Works

    Web UI

    Intranet (accessing server name)

    Works

Fails. New 'player' window is just a black page.

    Web UI

    Internet (accessing FQDN)

    Works

Fails. New 'player' window is just a black page.

    Windows Phone 8 App

    Internet

    Works

Fails. Music goes to player view. No sound, progress bar never moves. Play/pause button shows as being able to pause. Video just says 'Loading…' and then 'The specified file does not exist'.

    Windows 8 App

    Internet

    Works

Fails (End up back to home of app along with 'offline mode')

Where should I look to start troubleshooting? I've restarted the services as well as the server. I've disabled the firewall entirely. As the issue happens with the WebUI within my network, I'm assuming it has nothing to do with my router (though may be multiple issues). I've tried from multiple browsers/locations and from different PCs/tables (for the modern apps). Thanks for any pointers.

  • It may well be a router issue.

I assume you are accessing the site via the public name in the WebUI / Apps - whereas the DLNA App, XBOX and WebUi (using the internal server name?) would not go via the Router.

What router do you have? Is there a setting that blocks non HTTP connections on port 80/443?

  • Hi I have exactly the same issue, I currently only have 443 open from the internet to the server, I get the feeling that both the My Server app and the Silverlight web player actually need another port but so far I haven't been able to prove it.

I'll certainly try what Robert says and advise further.

  • Looks to me like port 80 is required (from my basic testing)

    Edit - Confirmed.

  • I will try this. I would have thought my tests from within my network (scenario #4 in my table above) would have worked. I'll update with my results.

  • What i saw in the network traces was that it requested the external address on port 80, so even though you went to the internal site name, the code in the site to actually begin the streaming, probably still requests the external fqdn (As that is the way it is coded to do so) so using the hostname trick (add an entry for the external site name, with the internal IP, to your hosts file) may help with that.

  • I have nearly the same Problems here too! Web UI Intranet and Internet does not work with Music here. Windows Phone 8 App and Windows 8 App has problems with pictures too. Sometimes some Folders are displayed, and sometimes nothing...
The Windows 8 App works with documents, but not for any media...

Playing music using DLNA works fine.

I also tried the trick with adding the external Name to the Hosts file-> same result!

  • In that case i would try and use wireshark and diagnose what might be happening, it may be tricky to do though.

  • after 20 tries it principle works. But here it Comes: only for mp3 files, not for WMA Lossless (in this Format are most of my files....) I have 498 Albums and 7754 Tracks, all sampled by myself...
I captured with wireshark, and found some streange out:

The Request that wenn i am using the Windows 8 App there are some packages going over the external Interface from my fritzbox, but i use the internal servername for Connection to Essentials Server...

Also interesting is, that there are multiple SSL Handshakes every 5 Seconds

  • Thanks Robert.

Opening port 80 resolved the WinPhone8 app entirely. Music on the phone app was the most important, so I'm pretty happy now.  Windows8 app and music in browser still failing. Here is an updated scenario:

    Client

    Location

    Pictures

    Music

    Video

    Web UI

    Internet (accessing FQDN)

    Works

Fails. Just black page. Using WMA CBR.

    Works

    Windows Phone 8 App

    Internet

    Works

    Windows 8 App

    Internet

    Works

Fails (End up back to home of app along with 'offline mode')

Fails (End up back to home of app along with 'offline mode')

Not sure what's going on with the win8 app when the winphone8 app works great.

I'll keep poking around. Thanks again.

  • the phone 8 app seems to work here too. the App for Surface RT and Surface Pro does not work. Then it must be a bug in the App I think. I think if the WP8 App works, the Router cannot be the problem. This must be a Bug on the Server.
