Software Updates Not Installing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello-

Interesting problem that has me scratching my head. July software updates, including Windows updates and other application updates, are deployed through the Software Update role, they download onto systems (showing up in ccmcache), but they are not installing.

We have our maintenance window disabled to try to force updates for now, but nothing seems to be going through. We removed the software update role and re-added it and rebuilt WSUS. Any logs in particular I should be looking at for errors or clues on why the updates aren't installing? As far as I can tell, they are not even attempting to install; nothing shows up in task manager that indicates a process is running related to the updates and there are not any other installations happening that would prevent another one from starting.

    Thanks for your help!

  • Are these for all products or for Windows 10?

Can you check wuahandler.log on a client to make sure its scanning for updates, and also check updatesdeployment.log on the client.

  • Hi,

After disable the maintenance window, we can try to clear the ccmcache and redeploy the software updates.

And we can review the logs as Nick said, and also check UpdatesHandler.log and UpdatesStore.log.

In addition, there is a detail software updates troubleshooting for your reference:

    Regards,

  • Hi Nick

Windows 7 and Windows 10 are not installing updates. UpdateDeployment.log is showing that the scan is running, finds actionable updates - see log snippet below. We currently have it set to install at deadline regardless of maintenance window.

I've cleared the cache and ran a new scan. The updates are downloading into C:\Windows\ccmcache\ but are not installing.

  • Never mind. Solved it. It was a check box on a collection...

  • Which checkbox ?
Would be nice to know, as I struggling with the same problem. Thanks

  • My guess is that they enabled the server groups feature and were trying to use it: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/sum/deploy-use/service-a-server-group

Unfortunately, this feature has side effects in certain scenarios. One common side-effect is to completely disrupt software updates on systems in the collection where this is enabled.

  • This SQL query would list all collections that has the 'Server Group Deployment Locks' option enabled (checked).

    ;with UseCluster as (select collections_g.SiteID as [CollectionID] from CEP_CollectionExtendedPropertiesjoin collections_g on CEP_CollectionExtendedProperties.Collectionid = collections_g.Collectionidwhere usecluster=1)select VCOLLECTIONS.siteid as [CollectionID], VCOLLECTIONS.CollectionName as [Collection Name], VCOLLECTIONS.MemberCount, VCOLLECTIONS.ObjectPath as [Collection Path]from UseClusterjoin VCOLLECTIONS on VCOLLECTIONS.siteid = UseCluster.CollectionID
