Can we activate the new Server 2012 R2 Evaluation RRS feed

  • Question

  • So i just downloaded the new Server 2012 R2 Evaluation located here.

    File name is "9600.16384.WINBLUE_RTM.130821-1623_X64FRE_SERVER_EVAL_EN-US-IRM_SSS_X64FREE_EN-US_DV5.ISO"

Can i install this and when my KMS server gets updated with the new keys it will activate or am i going to run into issues?

  • You will be able to activate, but you will need to change the activation key to a generic key.  You can find the list of generic keys here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867.aspx.

You can use slmgr.vbs to change the key and activate it.  slmgr.vbs /?

  • You should NOT be using that ISO for production builds.  You should be using either a Retail or Volume license copy for production builds.  Microsoft has made it possible to upgrade for the scenario where a customer uses the evaluation copy for evaluating the software, gets everything configured, and does not want to rebuild the environment.  Besides, if you use it for production builds, you have modify every single installation (and you are violating the user agreement that you agreed to when you downloaded the ISO).  With volume media, you won't have to modify every build.

  • I didn't mean permanently. Just until i got my hands on that Volume media which is another week or two for me. In the mean time i wanna start building my darn new storage servers and take advantage of the tiered storage pools.

If its just flipping to the KMS Client Setup Key Whats the big deal?
