GPP not working on Win7 x86 to map printers to LTP1 for non-admins. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We use Group Policy Preferences extensivly in our organization.  We have one set of users who both need to be non-admins and have a legacy program which requires the ability to print to LPT1.  Prior to the latest round of windows updates we've been using a scheduled task (triggered at logon w/highest privlages) to map a printer with  "net use LPT1 \\server\printer ."   We found that UAC had to be set to set at the default (just below highest) for this to work.  This task recently quit working (after the latest round of windows updates) so we're trying to switch to GPP.   In testing on a clean VM as a non-admin, the printer will add to the local system using GPP but will not map/reconnect to LPT1 (from preferences staged in the user section of GP).   After the printer maps via GPP, the net use command (as non admin) doesn't show anything on LPT1, and we cannot print to LPT1.  No errors are logged in even viewer.

Note that our default Win7 policy allows drivers to be installed from our print server by admins and non-admins alike:

Devices: Prevent users from installing printer drivers: Disabled

Point and Print Restrictions: Enabled  -->Server Defined -->No security prompts  (same setting for computers & users)

Is this a known glitch in GPP or is there a KB fix that I've somehow missed?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

    Paul K.
