HyperV checkpoint creation failing if VSS service is running RRS feed

  • Question

  • HyperV production checkpoint creation failing if VSS service is running, host OS is windows server 2016 STD with 2 Windows 2016 STD VMs on it. one of the VMs checkpoint creation is success (production and standard), where as the other is failing, but able to create the standard check point.

production check point creation will stuck at 9% and create an Event ID 18012.

If we shutdown the VM then we are able to take the production checkpoint. Tried the below steps

moved the VM location, recreated the VM but no luck

But when we stopped the VSS we were able to take the production checkpoint.

    any help is appreciated.

  • Hi,

Please check if the integration service has already update the latest version. I suggest you install the latest update for your VM.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/manage/manage-hyper-v-integration-services

    >> But when we stopped the VSS we were able to take the production checkpoint.

What's the difference between the two virtual machines?

    >> moved the VM location, recreated the VM but no luck

Do you mean that you recreated a VM with exist VHD, and then try to create production checkpoint again, but it failed?

In addition, checkpoints are only applicable to test and development environments and cannot be used to backup virtual machines. If you want to backup virtual machines, please use professional backup tools.
