Windows Server 2008 update fails with code 80070490 for KB2443685 RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Windows Server 2008 update fails with code 80070490 for KB2443685.  I have retried several times.  This update is labeled important, but it does not apply to my server - only servers in certain time zones.  How can I resolve this?  My server is remotely located and I can reboot it, but I cannot reboot it in safe mode.  It reboots and uses auto-logon.

This failure (80070490) also is now occurring for security update KB967723 - MS09-048 and I would like to get it to apply.

  • Did you ever get a working fix for this issue? I'm having this EXACT problem and the readiness tool does NOT fix it. It's a new server that's been deployed for about a week now and reinstalling from scratch is not an option whatsoever.

For the record, the fail code is 80070490 for KB2443685 and KB967723.

  • Maybe this helps.

Also posting the cbs.log in a new thread may help. The results are in %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

  • No, I did not resolve this problem.  I'm hoping it will eventually go away.  I don't want to do any major re-install of the OS because I fear it will make the situation worse and I will have to drive to the location where the server is located and sit there in a server room for half a day doing reboots until it works.  The risks of the proposed possible solution are not worth fixing the problem to me.

  • Try the manual update, short answer is windows update has issues - not you.

I bet you had trouble with KB967723 as well.  I don't know why MS doesn't ever put 2 and 2 together with these things and fix the update monster.  I had trouble with both via windows update, and installed both via manual back to back with no need for reboot and no problem.

  • Brian,

Thanks a million for posting this, I've searched for a couple of hours trying to resolve issues with those two updates to no avail and that link got it installed.  Even trying to run this from everywhere I could find it for manual download failed with a "not enough storage is available to process this command" error.  But this worked fine.  Again - thanks a million - you've just saved me from having to rebuild this server.

  • Please BE ADVISED! If you are having this issue trying to install KB967723 on 2008 64bit Server. I could not confirm from microsoft but after I manually installed this patch it was modified on the fly while the server rebooted. When I attempted to install it on our exch server 08 64 bit as well it said "not applicable for this os". Bottom Line. Don't attempt to install this patch! It seems to have issues. Our servers kept failing and rebooting on this patch.

  • Brian You are spot on.

We are working with Microsoft Server 2008 32 bit and had this same issue. I am the project leader here for a new deployment of multiple servers in a Forest Test environment.

After checking Time Date settings to ensure they were the same since this affects Windows Update

We tried clearing the Windows Update Software distribution file which sometimes becomes corrupt

We tried the System readiness tool without success

Scanned using the sfc /scannnow and it fixed the CBS.Log on our system too.

No Success up to this point

Finally I came across this post

    We Followed the following steps

Applying the KB2443685 Daylight savings Patch  32 bit

    Followed by the KB967723 Hotfix

This fixed the problem for us

    Thank you again Brian.
