WMI filter to apply GPO only to XP 32Bit

    Question

  • Hello,

I have been spending hours on this and would really appreciate help.

I am trying to apply a group policy with WMI filter to make sure it will only apply to Windows XP that is 32bit.

In group policy management I created the following WMI filter:

I created a new filter, the clicked Add and pasted:

    SELECT * FROM Win32_OperatingSystem WHERE Version = "5.1%" and ProductType = "1"

This one should make sure OS is XP

    I clicked Ok:

    Then clicked Add and pasted:

    Select * from Win32_Processor where AddressWidth = "32"

This one should make sure OS is 32bit

So I ended up with this one wmi filter with 2 entries

I applied it to the group policy object, but on my client computer the policy doesn’t apply, I am sure my client is XP 32bit.

When writing gpresult I get for this GPO - filtering denied (WMI filter).

    What am I doing wrong?

    Regards

  • Hi,

The '%' wildcard can't be used with the '=' operator, it needs the 'like' operator. So your first query would be:

    SELECT * FROM Win32_OperatingSystem WHERE Version LIKE "5.1%" and ProductType = "1"

    Thanks,

    Guy
