Using ADUC to work with AD LDS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to connect to my AD LDS instance using Active Directory Users and Computers.

It says that it suppose to be able to but each time I try I get "Data from ADUC [servername] is not available from DC [servername] because: An invalid directory pathname was passed.  Try again or choose another DC by selecting Connect to Domain Controller on the domain context menu."

    Any ideas ?

  • To manage an AD LDS instance, use ADSI Edit:

  • Mr X is right.  You can't use dsa.msc to manage AD LDS.

ADSIEdit, LDP or the AD Powershell cmdlets from 2008 R2 are your friends.

  • Does anyone know why it states in ADUC that you can select an AD LDS instance ?

i.e. Change to:   "This Domain Controller or AD LDS instance"  is in the [Change Directory Server] dialog box.

Which you get to by right clicking the very top node in the tree view and selecting  "Change Domain Controller"

  • All I did on the "Change Directory Server" dialog was

    1) select the empty line(usually the first one)

    2) press F2 to edit and typed in the name of the server that the AD LDS instance was on. you have to specify the port if your not running your LDS instance on a standard LDAP port.

It recognized it and it stated that it was online, but when I tried to connect it gave me the error I stated in the original post.

  • Hello,

IIRC the shown option belongs to mounting a snapshot created from AD or an AD LDS database only. The management of AD LDS instances are only possible with ADSIEdit.msc.

See also here about using the snapshot option:
