Installing another AD/DNS 2008 R2 server, stops on adprep error? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am setting up a new 2008 R2 AD/DNS server into an existing domain. This will take the place of an existing 2008 server that once I get the new one installed, transferred roles, etc...  will be demoted to a member server.

When I try and run DCpromo to install ADDS on the new R2 server, I get an error that I first need to run adprep/forestprep, but It can't run because ADDS is not yet installed.

I have ran adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep /gpprep on the existing server already and all was well.

Note: We do have one child domian still on Win2k3 server that will be going away eventually, would this be causing a problem?  Current domain functional level it Windows server 2003.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks, TAndrist

UPdate...I figured it out, you have to run the sysprep version off the R2 server.

  • Hello,

if you try to add a Windows server 2008 R2 as DC to a domain that only has Windows server 2008 DCs and the schema isn't prepared for Windows server 2008 R2, which it sounds like, you have to run adprep command from the Windows server 2008 R2 installation disk.

Please check with with "schupgr" the schema version, 44 is Windows server 2008 and 47 is Windows server 2008 R2.
