Asked by:
Excel file extinction is not valid on Windows File Server 2008

Question
-
Hi,
We have Windows File Server 2008 R2 and shared to the end users, It has many files (Excel, Words and PDF's),
Server hanged and all users got this error (Excel cannot open the file because the file format or file extinction is not valid) only for the files were open, And all old files are fine,
We tried to repair online tools, Excel recovery/fix tools /application, And with the excel repair option, Checked the unsaved files with no luck,
Anyone can help us on this please.
Thank You

You've asked in windows server forums that support the operating system itself. Try copying the files local and if problems persist I'd suggest reaching out to subject matter experts in dedicated forums here.

Thank you for your help
I believe it needs hotfix or update to be installed on the server.

You can verify system and servicing health by running;
sfc /scannow
also system update readiness tool
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821
Then check for errors in;
%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.logthen when all is good find the latest (non-ESU) cumulative updates here.

As Dave suggests try to copy the file and test it locally or in a different PCs.
I think you can also go to command line and check whether the file extension is correct like ".xls" or ".xlsx" if it is something else then it could be other issue.
Do you have an anti-virus on the server? and make sure the server is updated.
Malware or other potentially unwanted software or applications, can create this issue, they change or encrypt the file and users are unable to open.
Good luck!!!
Every second counts..make use of it. Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.
