  • You can run programs remotely on the Nano Server with Windows Remote Management (WinRM). To use WinRM, first configure the service and set the code page with these commands at an elevated command prompt:

    winrm quickconfig

    winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="*"}

    chcp 65001

    Now you can run commands remotely on the Nano Server. For example:

    winrs –r:<IP address of Nano Server> -u:Administrator -p:<Nano Server administrator password> ipconfig

    Then you can run your patch

  • Hi,

    First you need to download the update and extract the cab file:

    1. Go to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Windows%20Server%202016%20technical%20preview%204 and download the latest cumulative update.
    2. Use the following command to expand the MSU file:

    Expand –f:* <downloaded MSU path> <destination folder to copy extracted files>

    Then to apply the cab online:

    1. Copy the cab file to your Nano Server machine.
    2. Dism.exe /online /add-package /packagepath:<path to the cab file> /norestart

    Then to apply the cab offline:

    • Dism.exe /image:<mounted path> /add-package /packagepath:<path to the cab file>

    The WU Agent is in Nano Server and there is also a new WU WMI provider that can be used to scan and install for updates. However, we are currently investigating an issue with updates that shouldn’t apply to Nano Server being downloaded and causing WU to fail. Once we have that fixed, I’ll post instructions on how to use WU and WSUS.

    Hope that helps,

    Andrew
