Windows 2008 R2 will not install any drivers RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am at a lost, this is the 5th time I am encountering this issue on either a Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2 machine however this time I cannot reinstall Windows. The server worked flawlessly for month - nothing was installed no updates nothing. Not even on the domain yet because we were waiting for the requirements from the client. I cannot install ANY device USB, PCI modems, Generic PNP Monitor, in fact the system will not even run a backup because shadow copies fails because it cannot install the driver for "Generic Volume Shadow Copy". If I attempt to manually install a device through device manager I get the "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it". I've already tried to do an in-place upgrade (repair) to no avail. When investigating the setupapi.dev.log below are some of the results:

I've tried the various options from MS even those aimed towards vista, nothing has worked. I must be doing something wrong, because so far this issue has happened only to me as I have searched for various topics such as "driver failure Error 0xc0000142". The only results I receive are those pertaining to C++ programming and an application that failed to initialize.

I have also tried a clean boot with no luck.

  • Havent seen this issue before. Does the server have SP1? If not try and install SP1 to see if SP1 installation will repair any corruptions.

  • Hi,

The drivers you mentioned seems all build-in drivers. As an inplace upgrade is performed, files should be fine unless the installation disk is corrupted.

As Windows Update will download drivers for devices, have a test to scan for updates and install any driver it found to see if it could be fixed.

As Windows 2008 SP1 may also helpful if it could be installed on this server.

  • Sorry to the delay getting back, the server(s) are all running SP1, I have tried the OEM media that came with them as well as a downloaded evaluation version just for testing with the same result.  Windows update finds no new drivers.  At this point in time we've been forced to take 2 steps back and go with Server 2003 R2 since we need to get this client up and running.  Remote APP would have been great but what can you do.  We've also haulted deployment of Windows 7 as well.
