WDS PXE suddenly stopped working.Error 0xc0000001 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone, hope you can help me.

I have a Windows Server 2019 with WDS role

It was working perfectly with many virtual and physical machines for Windows deployment.

Suddenly without changing anything it stopped working and now machines (virtual or physical) get stuck at the start of the loading bar and then display this error:

    Status: 0xc0000001

Info: A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.

I've already tried reinstalling WDS role and shared file

  • Hi,

To help you better, will you be providing the details on what you configured?

Have you got error code in windows event log?

Please have a try with the method below:

    1.Open WDS

2.Right-click your server in the left pane and open properties.

3.Open tab “TFTP” and change the maximum block size to eg 1024.

    4.Restart your WDS server.

Uncheck "Enable Variable Windows Extension" in the TFTP tab on WDS Server could solve it.

If that doesn't work, you may refer to the following link for solutions:

  • My instance of MDT/WDS stopped working yesterday as well. Out of nowhere with no changes being made prior to it going down.

Unchecking "Enable Variable Windows Extension" resolved the issue as suggested above. For my instance, I did not have to adjust the max block size value which was set to 0 by default.

  • All,

See the known issues on a March 2019 KB:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4489899/windows-10-update-kb4489899

After installing this update, there may be issues using the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) to start a device from a Windows Deployment Services (WDS) server configured to use Variable Window Extension. This may cause the connection to the WDS server to terminate prematurely while downloading the image. This issue does not affect clients or devices that are not using Variable Window Extension.

This should be resolved in the June 11th patch:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4503327/windows-10-update-kb4503327

Addresses an issue that may prevent the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) from starting a device from a Windows Deployment Services (WDS) server configured to use Variable Window Extension.

So either disable the checkbox for Variable Window Extension, or install KB4503327.

    Thanks,
    Tim
