Windows Server 2008 R2 service pack 1 fails with 800F0818

    Question

  • I have several Windows Server 2008 R2 boxes. However one box is unable to install SP1 from either WSUS or standalone package.

Here are some logs from wsus:

  • Yes, I fixed this issue (thanks to Tim who pointed me to a readiness log files). I still don't know how this happened, but Package_for_KB979916_RTM~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.mum (as stated in the logs) become invalid. I've copied this file from another machine and replaced existing. After this I was able to successfully install SP1.

  • try running the system update readiness tool and see what output it gives you.

"Attempting to create remote handler process as SYSADMINS\Administrator in session 2"

Is there already a windows update session running on a 2nd login?

  • No. I'm logged in via RDP. The error appears even if no one is logged and windows update tries to automatically install service pack update.

nope. srclient.dll is system restore library. As system restore is unavailable in Windows Server products, you will always see this entry in windowsupdate.log file on Windows Server systems. Updates can be installed without creating restore points.

My thought is that the problem is caused by invalid MUM faile. I've compared them with other systems, and they are identical. And I'm not sure what should I do to resolve this issue.

  • you know, when I was looking at solutions for this kind of error, someone did copy over files from a working machine and that did the trick.  I was hesitant to provide that as a solution as that rarely fixes things.  glad to hear you got it working!

  • In this case log files clearly told me that here is an issue. Even if both files are equals (by file size, I haven't calculated hashes for tham) the trick works.

Which file do I need to copy from my other 2008 R2 Server?

    Thank you,

    John

    Wednesday, March 16, 2011 5:16 PM
  • These files arte stored in windows system directory (usually C:\Windows). There is a folder named servicing and so on (see that your path starts with servicing folder).

    What you need to do?

    1) backup your system.

    2) On existing system take ownership of these files (be careful and find exact files). Grant full control permissions for yourself only for these files. Delete them or copy to safe location.

    3) Grant yourserlf Modify permissions on Packages folder. Select the scope: This folder only.

    4) take these files (with exact names) from other system where SP1 was installed successfully and copy them to target machine.

    5) revert permissions to original state: set System as owner and remove Modify permissions from Package folder.

    Should work.

  • I don't seem to have those two files on my other 2008 R2 Server. Is there anything else that I can do?

Both servers have the File Services role installed. I'm not sure why the files aren't on the other 2008 R2 Server (which has SP1 installed)..

    Thank you,

    John
