SMBWitness Client failed registration request for \\ip\sharename with error (the request is not suppoted) event ID: 40

    Question

  • Hi,

Where can I find information when the Error event id 40 for the SMBWitnessClient is logged to the event log. We have this event randomly on our 2012 R2 server's log and when this error appears the server seems to lose its connection to the SMB fileshare that is located on a two node Windows fileserver 2012 R2 cluster. The share are configured with continuous availability and SMB3.0. I cannot find anywhere even a good description what makes the SMBWitnessClient to log event id 40. Some pointers whre to find more information about the event ID 40 and it's possible cause are appreciated.

    Regards,

    Jyri

  • Hello Jyri,

Thank you for posting in this forum.

Below is some information I found about this error:

SMB Witness is a service that could help accelerates SMB connections to be reconnected to a clustered SMB file share in the event of an unplanned failure. Generally, when a SMB connection established between a client and a file server cluster. During the SMB Witness server initialization, it will try to enumerate the cluster resources, and add the name to its NameList. During the registration, the client would provide the cluster network name to the SMB Witness server, which will need to validate the request name with its own NameList. Basically, it is a by-design behavior which is already hardcoded in the SMB Witness Service. Based on the SMB Witness nature.

Hope the information provided is helpful to you.

    Best Regards,

    Leon
