Hyper-V live migration fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We 've installed a couple of Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V servers.

After that we created a couple of VDI's and we configured Kerberos delegation.

When we try to move a VDI (live migration) it gives an error message:  failed to load the virtual machine data: failed to get the disk information (the system cannot find the file specified, error 0x80070002).

It still wants to move the template.vhdx, although the template.vhdx is renamed to the name of the VDI and changed in the Hyper-V settings (and it runs normally).

Where is the information about the vhdx saved (in the registry?) and how can we modify this?

  • Not clear on what you are trying to do.  Live migration is used to move running VMs.  It sounds like you are trying to move a virtual hard disk that is used as a template.  If you simply want to move a .vhdx file from one location to another, you can simply copy it - you do not use live migration.  If you wish to move a running virtual machine and its associated storage, you use live storage migration.

A .vhdx file contains all the information about the .vhdx file in itself.  No registry storage involved.  A virtual machine has several files that may be included that define what the virtual machine is and what its associated files are.  No registry storage involved.

What, exactly, are you trying to do?  Are you trying to move the entire running virtual machine from one host to another?  Or are you simply trying to copy the template.vhdx file from one host to another host?

  • Hi,

These VDIs are created using the template VHDX or it is booting from the parent VHDX from a central location. Could you please confirm whether the extension of the virtual hard disks in VDIs.

From the explanation, I presume that it is a parent-child VHD concept and the destination node may not be able to find the path of the parent VHDX.

  • Hi,

We installed a machine, did a sysprep and exported it (kind of a template).

Then it was imported (with copy).

All the vdx files have been renamed to the name of the new machine.

We want to live migrate it while it is running.

  • Hi,

Are the config files and VHDXs are in the cluster shared volume of the cluster?

  • Hi,

No, they don't use shared storage.

Each server has their own internal storage.

We used this website as an example:
