How to index .msg files on a Windows Server 2019 file server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

we have a Windows Server 2019 file server with the fulltext indexing service installed. It indexes office files and pdf files just fine, but apparently there is no IFilter installed for .msg files - that extension does not appear in the list for extensions to be indexed. The file names of .msg files get indexed, but not its contents.

What must I do to have the indexing service index the contents of mail messages inside .msg files containing email messages stored from Outlook 2019/365 please?

  • Hi Stefan,

You might want to contact the Microsoft support, as stated in the official Outlook troubleshooting link below:

    Reference:
    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/troubleshooting-outlook-search-issues-2556b11f-f4d8-46be-b0a7-de33a3f4f066

Under the "Configure indexing options" section.

"Note: Make sure the Filter Description column shows Office Outlook MSG IFilter. If it doesn't, either the Windows Search service is not working correctly, or Microsoft Outlook could not install the filters correctly. In either case, you should contact Microsoft Support for help with the issue."

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Hello Leon and Candy,

Thanks for your input. I will first try to just add .msg and let the file properties being indexed, and see what happens. If that does not help, I'll place a support call as you suggested.
