[Forum FAQ] Introduce the Media Streaming feature in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Digital Media:

Digital media refers to audio, video, and photo content that has been encoded (digitally compressed). Encoding content involves converting audio and video input to a digital media file such as a Windows Media file. After digital media is encoded, it can be easily manipulated, distributed, and played by computers, and it is easily transmitted over computer networks.

Many people store music, video, and pictures in shared folders in Windows Server 2012 Essentials. There may be times when you want to do: Watch videos, Play music and Present photo slide shows.

The media streaming feature in Windows Server Essentials makes it possible for networked computers and some networked digital media devices to play digital media files that are stored on the server.

When you turn the media server on, content that you share in the media libraries will be available for play on devices on your network that are capable of receiving streaming media from your server. You can stream most types of digital media files.

How to get media streaming feature on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

Generally, when open Dashboard to view Settings panel on the Server Essentials or access Remote Web Access website, as Figure 1 and Figure 2 show, we can see nothing for the media streaming feature.

By default, the media streaming function is unavailable in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience role installed. To add the media streaming functionality in these versions, we need to download and install the
Windows Server Essentials Media Pack from Microsoft Download Center.

When download the Windows Server Essentials Media Pack, we may encounter the error: Your current security settings do not allow the file to be downloaded. (Figure 3)

If so, please refer to following steps:

    1. Click Tools in the IE and select Internet Options.

    2. Open the Security tab and click Trusted sites.

    3. Add the Microsoft download website to the zone.

Then, you are able to download and install it. (Figure 4-6)

If there is any error during the installation, you may go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs and get the MediaPackInstallationWizard, MediaStreamingEnabler and MediaStreamingProvider log files for troubleshooting. (Note: the folder is hidden. Please open Control Panel, select Folder Options, select View tab and check ‘Show hidden files, folders and drives’.)

After installation completes, please open Dashboard to view Settings panel and access Remote Web Access website again. You will find the media streaming functionality is available in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. (Figure 7, Figure 8)

You will be able to manage media server using the Dashboard. You can complete tasks as turn media streaming on or off, add digital media files to the server, allow or restrict access to a media library on the server, rename the media library, stop sharing digital media and so on.
