activation of hyperv vm - server 2016 standard???? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I bought a new server with a new win 2016 server standard installed and activated (I have valid a license key).On this server I Added the Hyper-V role, and I have rights to create 2 VM with win server 2016 each.

As I didn't receive any ISO, I downloaded from download.microsoft.com the win 22016 standard evaluation ISO (14393.0.161119-1705.RS1_REFRESH_SERVER_EVAL_X64FRE_FR-FR.iso).

I created 2 vm's, both activated automatically but limited to 180 days (it is displayed on the screen). I would like to type the product key to convert the evaluation license into a permanent license. Problem: The license key used on the server not accepted.

Do I have to install win server 2016 from another .iso (where can I download it?)? POr do I receive other licese keys? The server reseller doesn't know.

    Please help!!!!!

  • The OEM provider doesn't have any installation media and told to download evaluation iso.

The OEM is bound under contract with microsoft to provide support for the products they sell, so I'd ask the OEM's trained licensing specialist for help.

You can also try the microsoft activation center but they'll likely refer you to OEM for support.

  • You didn't mention the product key channel, but if OEM or volume product keys then you'll also want to use the OEM or volume distribution media for operating system installation. The TechNet evaluations can only be activated using a retail product key.

  • Hello Alain,

OEM licenses are purchased with a specific piece of hardware and are licensed just for that hardware, so in other words OEM activation codes only work with OEM installation media.

Licensing the Windows Server 2016 evaluation using an OEM key is not possible, you would need to get the installation media from the OEM provider.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • On the invoice it is written:

Windows Server 2016 std 16 core OEM P73-07114

Windows server is installed on a new server, I Don't have any installation media.

Licensing rules: using  Windows Server 2016 std I am allowed to create 2 hyperv vm having each Windows Server 2016 std.To create a vpm using Hyper-V, Hyper-V needs an ISO. Which can be used?

  • If you didn't get any installation media with your server, ask your reseller for one.

You'll need to ask the OEM for installation media that lines up with the product key channel.

  • The OEM provided me another ISO to download to install vm's.

The install and activation work with this iso, but I have lots of other problems, e.g. after installing 2018-05 cumulative updates of win server 2016, I installed dns server and AD, promoted it to AD. No error at that time, but 2019-07 updates fail to install. Either the iso is bad either there is a problem with patching or (brand new) hardware. Already tried 3 times, I begin to be fed up (windows updates take HOURS to be applied on a powerful computer... and nothing works yet).
