Can't remove Active Directory

    Question

  • Hello there,

I am in the process of studying for exam 70-294 and I have a problem that I'd like to overcome without reinstalling the server.
I promoted one of the servers to a DC then I promoted the other as a second DC in the same domain. Then I able to removed the DC role of the second server but I got an error that I don't remember what it was because the second time I tried it was successful.

I then promoted the server again to a DC in the same domain in order to test AD restore and now I can't remove AD from the second server anymore. I start Dcpromo.exe, I click Next on the welcome screen, on the Indicate whether this is the last domain controller in the domain I click Next without checking the box because it is not the last DC, I enter the new admin password twice and click Next, On the summary page, I click Next again. a couple of seconds after the process starts, I get the following error message:

    --------------------------------------------------<error message starts>--------------------------------------------------

    The operation failed because:

Active Directory could not transfer the remaining data in directory partition CN=Schema,CN=Configuration, DC=contoso, DC=com to domain controller ServerName.comtoso.com.

"The DSA object could not be found."

    ---------------------------------------------------<error message ends>--------------------------------------------------

I tried everything I could possibly think of to remove it but I keep getting this error message.
Could anybody help me please with this issue?

    Thank you,

  • I'm afraid this is not possible - since your DC is apparently considering itself as the sole DC in its domain

Shut down/reinstall the problematic DC and clean up AD by following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555846 (for Windows Server 2003-based DC) or simply by deleting the DC computer object (Domain Controllers OU) if you are using Windows Server 2008-based admin tools

  • Hello Marcin,

I suspected that this is one of the problem so I followed a procedure to transfer FSMO roles to my first DC but it still doesn't want to remove AD from the second server.

Any suggestion other than reinstalling the OS?

    Thank you,
