    When I attached the flash drive to windows 7 it read it install the right drivers and said it was ready. The problem is that when I clicked on "my computer" i did not see it and then when I went to "Devices" in "Control Panel" it was there. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive to see if that help but i did not and I also tried to update but it was up to date. I dont know what to do the computer knows it is there but does not show it as a Drive.

    No, you should NOT have to reformat the drive on Win7.  Other folks have posted similar symptoms here, I'm trying to track down some troubleshooting suggestions.  I don't have any tips for you right now, sorry. :(

    Just type disk management in start menu  and it will say Create and format hard disk partitions click on it and look for your drive and then right click to format and then you should see it under my computer

    Having the same issues with my new computer/windows 7 home edition.  No USB flash drives can be opened.  The device management console is NEVER "up-to-date" no matter how many times you restart it and the computer so the drive path can never be established.  VERY frustrating.  Hope someone finds a way to fix this.

    Sorry for reviving this old thread, but I didn' see any real resolution.  I had a similar problem when I was trying to access pictures from a memory card using my USB memory card reader.  The drive wouldn't appear under my computer.  What I did to fix the problem was going to Control Panel>>Administrative Tools>>Computer Management>>Disk Management.  I found my drive listed here and changed the drive letter.  Then it appeared in My Computer.  I run a Windows 7 64-bit machine.

    Had the same problem and changing drive letter worked for me. Seems like a stupid glitch for a new OS?

    I have this problem too - my Bytestor USB 2.0 Flash Drive appears in Device Manager as 'USB Disk Pro USB Device' under Floppy Drives but does not appear in Computer Management - this shows only the Hard Drive and the CD, it does not show the Floppy Drive (A:), which does not show up in Explorer either, so I cannot change or assign drive letters..

    This problem obviously hasn't been addressed yet.  I'm having the same issues with Kingston and Cruzer drives.  Tried removing drivers and reinstalling, etc...  The problem doesn't appear on my work computer running Windows 7 Enterprise, but on my personal laptop using Office 2010 (07 on the work box) IE 9, Windows 7 Home Ultimate

    I work part-time in the IT dept at a local community college and i have noticed this issue twice just today - I dont think it matters what brand of flash drive - I havent tried an xp machine but all our student use pc's are win 7 professional with ms office 07 - my office pc has office 2010 and it happened on their too. the machines recognize the drive when it is inserted the first time and attempts to load the drives but fails in doing so. I dont see it in disk management either. its almost as if the drivers are corrupt. At first i thought it was that the drive had become corrupted but when a second student came in with the same issue i thought it cant be coincedental. A sloution would be nice as i can forsee this become a big issue with more and more students having the same issue.

    i have the same problem on my home computer. when i take the key to my windows xp it works just fine. strange. a solution would be really nice.

    Hello folks,

    Maybe something to help you out.  I have Win7 64 bit (not sure if that matters)and was running into this same issue.  My thumb drive was not showing in Window's explorer but would show under the drive management mapped to "H:" in my case.  In the Win explorer view H was also a mapping to my external network drive that was turned off/powered down so it was not connected.  So it appears Window's tried to use H for the thumb drive as well and explorer already had a H drive listed.

    I changed the network drive to "T:" and now I can remove and reattach the thumb drive and it goes to H each time, this happens to be the next available logical drive letter on my system.  Check if your have a similar setup, Windows will attempt to use the next available drive letter and if that is set to a mapped drive drive management is not taking that into consideration.

    Faced the same issue as by northernmaximus . If one is willing to let go of data, cleaning it up completely will help. I love Windows 7 and hope you guys come up with a more tangible solution. Someone who can afford to lose his/her data might find the solution here. Windows 7 flash drive issue solution .

    HI there, 

    I been having the same problem over the last couple of days with 2 cruzer thumb drives in windows 7 32 bit Ultimate. i have 1 is 8GB and the other is 16GB. They both fail to show in my computer, but when inserted windows makes the sound, device manager refreshes itself but shows nothing new. When i check disk management the device is not their either. I have a windows xp and a linux machine all right next to each other. it works in both of them with no issues. i also have linux installed on the same machine as windows 7, when i reboot into linux and check, the device works with no issues. I has to be a fault with windows or settings we have.  Im not going to format the drive because i know it works fine. A solution would be great.

    in the mean time im switching to linux.

    i have a 4gb transcend. i went to put it my computer and it shows normally. but when i go to open, it gives me a message saying, "Please insert a disk into ******* (E:)." i have tried a bunch of different things such as reinstalling the drive, recovering it, formatting it, defragmenting it, etc. and when i go to format it, it tells me the same thing, Please insert a disk. do you have any suggestions on how to fix this.

    I recently had an issue with my Win 7 Enterprise 64-Bit and the San Disk Cruzer line of flash drives.  The flash drives would not recognize.  The drives would attach but not so in Disk Management nor as a Folder under the Computer.  They could be recognized on other Win 7 Enterprise 32-Bit systems except 1 that also did not like the Sadn Disk Cruzers.  I had the Fit and the Edge with both had the same issue.  If you formated the drive on a machine that recognized it, it would allow you so see it on the machines that originally had issues.  But unplug it and plug it back in and the machine goes back to no seeing it.  The flash drives were Brand New out of package.  I would have to think there is an issue with Windows 7 or Dell and the San Disk Cruzer lines.  I bought a $4 PNY from Walmart and it works perfectly fine.

    A new issue that came up for me yesterday was I had a Lexar that was recognized right away.  I didnt need that data on it so I formatted it and the USB trips out much like the San Disks.  If I leave the drive in and watch it, that USB goes through a series of connect and disconnect for 5- 10minutes then Windows opens up and asks if I want to open the folder to the drive.  I took it to another Win 7 machine and it recognized the drive right away.  I attempted the format and it too functioned the exact same way of a series of connects and disconnects then finnally  5- 10 minutes later recognze and stay stable.

    I wonder is there and underlying issue with Windows 7 and USB Flash Drives?

    Just wondering if that could mean that douring the install on the flshdrv it coulda corrupted the device driver??
