DnldMgr Error 0x80072efd occurred while downloading update; notifying dependent calls.

    Question

  • Greetings,

I have been running WSUS at my site going on a year now, and have been fairly successful with monitoring and applying updates.j

Very recently a number of my clients a particular site say just slightly less than half have been displaying this error while downloading updates from the server.

I have researched the topic and found few possible solutions, but after testing nothing seems to be consistent.

    1.   stop update service and bits and remove the sus client ids and restart the service.

    2.  flushdns entries

    3.  verify that windowsauthenticated users have access to WSUS folders in IIS.

    4.  re-register the wups2.dll

Trouble is no one solution seems to work and so I'm having hard time pinning down a specific solution that I need to apply to 78 or so computers.  Additionally it seems work almost instantly sometimes and other times it doesn't seem to get fixed till the next day.  Its quite confusing, and it seems only affect 1 site out of 4, and I'm anxious to keep the problem isolated to one site.

  • > While I have your ear how do you usually decide which updates to discard

Most updates I discard (read: Decline) are done so on principle, and the knowledge that they'll never been needed. For example, I currently have no 64-bit servers in my SOHO dev network, thus it serves me no purpose at all to maintain status on 64-bit updates, so all Itanium and x64 updates get declined immediately upon arrival.

Recurring release updates such as Defender sigs, IMF sigs, Forefront sigs, MSDTs, and Cumulative Updates (IE/OE) are declined as soon as superceded. Primarly this is to faciliate the removal of the associated content, which, particularly in the case of CumUpdates, can be somewhat sizable.

Beyond that, I don't generally discard anything, though I currently have a number of updates I've not approved, and likely never will. For example, I've never approved IE7 for Windows Server 2003. Eventually my servers will all migrate to Windows Server 2008, where they'll have a native IE7 installation. I've not approved Silverlight for servers, since nobody should be browsing from the server console anyway, and certainly not to any sites inclined to use Silverlight as a presentation tool. I've not yet approved the RDCv6 upgrade for Windows Server, since I don't initiate RDC sessions from the servers, and even if I did, it wouldn't be to a Vista/Win2008 system, which is the primary need for that RDC6 upgrade.

Beyond that, for other types of updates, I generally decline them after the superceding updates have been successfully installed to all applicable systems and the superceded update is reported as Not Applicable on all systems.

    > Is there a good information source available to judge the value of updates and whether or not I should install them on decline them forever?

The best "information sources", in my opinion, are three things:

[1] The Microsoft MSRC Bulletins and/or Knowledge Base articles that describe the details of the update, including the risks and applicabilities.

[2] Your perceived need of the benefits or purpose of the update in your environment.

[3] Successful deployment of the update in a TEST environment that adequately represents your production enviroment.

  • The 0x80072EFD error is logged when the Windows Update Agent receives NO RESPONSE from the destination WSUS Server. This can be for any number of possible reasons, but almost all of them are associated with defects in the network infrastructure, e.g. failed DNS, a reconfigured firewall/proxy, a router with bad routing tables.

The solution you cite above (flush DNS) addresses only one possible cause amongst a myriad of causes.

My suggestion would be, rather than trying to simultaneously troubleshoot several dozens computers across several sites, you pick ONE computer at ONE site. Given that this problem appears to have occurred concurrently on all systems, the solution for ONE system will likely be the solution for ALL systems.

As is always the case in such "it worked, but now it doesn't work" scenarios.. we must first ask and answer the question: WHAT CHANGED?

Note, the answer is not "I didn't change anything", because the admin troubleshooting the problem is rarely the person who changed whatever it was that changed. More often it's the case of some other person changing something, or a software update to a 3rd party product changing a configuration, or a group policy enabling or reconfiguring a firewall where none existed before, or upgrading WSUS which has negative issues on the proxy configuration (and is documented in the Release Notes).

In addition to pursuing the question of What Changed, you should also perform a complete suite of network connectivity diagnostics from your selected client to the WSUS Server, starting with a review of the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log to pinpoint exactly WHEN the communications issue first appeared. Also, note that the WUA uses WinHTTP to communicate with the WSUS Server, so while IE URL testing can establish that general network connectivity is not broken, it is not a definitive statement that all network connectivity from the client to WSUS is working correctly.

  • This is quite true, and I have been tackling single computers to correct the problem.

What has changed is the IP address of the WSUS server since we changed subnet masking at our site.

In my early test stages I simply used the IP address at this site, and when the subnet mask and IP changes occurred I took the opportunity to change the policy to reflect the server name as well instead of an IP.

Now roughly 81 out of 277 computers are experiencing this problem,  they communicate with the WSUS server, but when they try and download updates several different error's occur.

Here is an excerpt of the log I see on the problem clients.  All of them have similiar errors.

  • Okay, let's talk about the most common ramifications of changing the IP Address of the WSUS Server.

    1. This client may have had pending download requests to the *OLD* IP Address. Unfortunately the logfile doesn't indicate the actual path where the download was being requested from. If there were pending download request, they immediately became unresolvable when you changed the IP Address, and this would cause 0x80072EFD errors while *downloading*. To ensure all old requests are cleared, use the BITSADMIN.EXE tool and run BITSADMIN /ALLUSERS /RESET on each workstation showing this error. You accomplished the same thing (and, unfortunately, several other undesirable side-effects) when you trashed the SoftwareDistribution folder.

    2. You're also encountering an 0x8024400D/SOAP 0x12c error accessing the SimpleAuth.asmx webservice, combined with an 0x80244015 error. This is a recently encountered issue and is has been observed in some load balancing scenarios. Review this blog entry for more details and a resolution, should the error recur:
    http://blogs.technet.com/sus/archive/2008/10/29/wsus-clients-fail-synchronization-with-0x80244015-and-0x8024400d-errors.aspx.

    3. Also, the 0x8024400D/0x80244015 errors have shown up as a result of an Office update issue. See this blog post (resolution included here) for more details:
    http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archive/2008/06/18/client-server-synchronization-issues.aspx

    Root Cause:

A recent revision to the ‘Office 2003 Service Pack 1’ update has resulted in some WSUS 3.0 servers syncing

the revised update to enter an inconsistent state with respect to the update’s approvals. When computers with products related to Office 2003 communicate with such a server, the Web service is unable to process the approvals resulting in the detection failure.

    Workaround:

In order to reset the approvals to a consistent state on the WSUS server, follow these steps from the WSUS Administration Console:

    1.       Find the Office 2003 Service Pack 1 update in the updates list, UpdateID: D359F493-0AAD-43FA-AF5C-6763326CD98F. This may involve changing the Status and Approval filters. Set Status to Any and Approval to Declined; if you still do not see the update, set Approval to Any Except Declined.

    2.       Perform the following steps:

    a.        Ensure the update is already declined.

    i.      If the update is not already declined, right-click on the update and then click Decline in the shortcuts menu.

    b.       Cause the update not to be declined.

    i.            Right-click the update and then click Approve in the shortcuts menu.

ii.            In the Approve Updates dialog that opens, just click OK without making any changes to the approval settings.

    c.        Decline the update.

    i.       Right-click the update and then click Approve in the shortcuts menu.

ii.       In the Approve Updates dialog that opens, just click OK. Dismiss the Approval Progress dialog that appears.

The computers that were failing detection will now successfully complete detection against the server and receive any applicable updates.

  • Its downloading from my wsus server i simply removed the name before posting it to the forum.  What side effects might i encounter, after researching the errors it was one of several possible fixes I came up with?

The bitsadmin tool i found for xp (bits admin 1.0 [5.1.2600.0]) doesn't have /alluser /reset as an option, will /reset do the same thing?

I don't have load balancing set up.  At present I have 4 WSUS servers and the 1 of the 4 is the upstream server for the rest.

I implemented the possible office fix for that error

  • > What side effects might i encounter, after researching the errors it was one of several possible fixes I came up with?

It's unfortunate there are so many people recommending tearing down the building because somebody broke the glass; alas, that seems to be what's happening with WSUS. The most significant impact of purging the SoftwareDistribution folder is that the client loses ALL history of update installations, which are maintained in a datastore in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore, as well as the ReportingEvents.LOG file, which is maintained in the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution.log. The ReportingEvents.LOG file is a permanent logfile, which contains the entire history of events on the client; the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.LOG is a rolling log file and is truncated according to size and date of entry.

*RARELY* is the Windows Update Agent so messed up that a complete purge of this folder is necessary; in most cases very specific surgical remediation can solve the problem without such drastic measures (such as properly using BITSADMIN to clear the BITS cache, rather than destroying the entire client-side identity that created the jobs in the cache).

    > The bitsadmin tool i found for xp (bits admin 1.0 [5.1.2600.0]) doesn't have /alluser /reset as an option, will /reset do the same thing?

No, it will not. BITSADMIN v1.5 cannot be used to manage the WUA, as it doesn't have the /ALLUSER option, which is necessary to clear the BITS jobs created by the SYSTEM account under which "Automatic Updates" is executed.

The BITSADMIN v2.0 tool is in the \Support\Tools folder of the XP Service Pack 2 CDROM, or on the Windows Server 2003 CDROM, and can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. (BITSADMIN v3 is native on Vista and Win2008.)

  • Thats certainly useful information to know.  I imagine like me people simply try solutions after researching for the best possible solution they can come up with.  They then test it in a test environment and then implement it to live.  It it works it works and they deal with after effects if any down the road.  Somewhere along the line someone else has a similiar problem so they offer their particular solution to a problem.  So solutions that might not be actually ideal become known to many and then you like said many are doing it 8).

On a good note my fix worked on the test group and all are properly talking to the WSUS server now!

While I have your ear how do you usually decide which updates to discard, I have been installing updates steadily throughout the year since I brought this system online.  I chose to not install more than a couple a week so as to judge any impact before proceeding.  I have a test group that gets the update a week before the live production groups.

There are so many updates out there and new ones every month.  Is there a good information source available to judge the value of updates and whether or not I should install them on decline them forever?

  • I know this thread is old but I figured I would add to it since google knows no age when it comes to people searching for error codes and such.

I had this error 80072efd because I tried to secure the entire WSUS server with SSL.  I removed port 80 bindings and only allowed 443.  This was a mistake.  You have to allow http traffic and you only can require SSL for the following directories:

    SimpleAuthWebService

    DSSAuthWebService

    ServerSyncWebService

    APIRemoting30

    ClientWebService

Then even if you already have your cert binded in IIS, Microsoft reccomends doing this:

Open cmd as an administrator and Navigate to the %ProgramFiles%\Update Services\Tools\ folder.
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:
    Wsusutil configuressl certificateName
    where:
certificateName is the DNS name of the WSUS server.

I then did an iisreset and checked for updates.  Sure enough they downloaded with NO ISSUES!

Google may know no age, but many of us don't like having to re-read dozens of posts from a seven year old thread just to get context on what you're talking about. Plus, almost certainly, any issue you are experiencing today is NOT at all related to an issue experienced in =2008=.

This is why the conventional practice is to start a NEW thread and provide relevant descriptions of YOUR environment, issue(s), and attempts to resolve.

Yep! This is all DOCUMENTED in the WSUS Deployment Guide. :-)
